Parking in Berkeley?

So I'm bringing a car to my apartment this year

Where are some good places to park on campus, especially northside? Any specific streets?

Also, how do street parking hours work at berkeley? Free from 7pm-latenight? Any free street parking? 2 hour max? Parking meter hours?

I highly recommend buying a semester parking permit if you can afford it. You get to park in a ton of places for just around $300/semester.

Although I live on southside, I park in the university’s parking garage located on Channing and Dana. There is another parking garage at underhill near unit 1. On the west side, you can park at this parking lot on hearst and shattuck. On the east side, there are tons of parking lots near the stadium. There is another parking lot behind foothill for students, and lastly, there is a nice parking structure on hearst and euclid for you on north side.

You can park at the structures for 24hrs/day so long as you display your placard.

Just buy a city permit, for $30 for an entire year it’s a good deal.

The student parking offered from the university isn’t that great. Any time there’s a special event (ie football game, concert, graduation, etc) the campus won’t allow student permit holders to park in some parking areas. If you leave it there you’ll find an expensive citation on your car or you won’t find your car at all (meaning it was towed away and you will have to pay $100-$300 to retrieve your car from the impound lot in oakland).

Also, the univ doesn’t guarantee spaces to be available. For instance, underhill fills up fast in the morning as commuter students arrive, so the lot may be completely full. $300 isn’t that great when you have to move your car often during a special event and if you’re not always guaranteed a space.

If you like having a reserved space that’s available 24/7 rent a private space from an apartment manager. Ask next door or find one on craigslist. They usually go for $80-$100/mo

Or you can buy a city permit. Northside tends to have a decent amount of street parking available for residents. However the downside is that you may have to move your car on street sweeping days (check parking signs for dates). But you may be lucky, due to budget cuts certain neighborhoods no longer have street sweeping.

I have a parking space on Dana for southside but am just wondering where are some good places to park in the morning or night while I’m at class/rsf or something like that.

What exactly is this city permit thing?

In the morning you can park in the residential areas which have 2 hours of free parking. If you need to park longer you need to move your car every 2 hours or use water to wash off the chalk meter maids leave on the tires. There’s free parking with no time limit if you go off campus for like 10 blocks (South of Alcatraz St or West of California St). You can try Gayley Rd near the stadium for parking, free and no time limit, but lots of drivers know this and all spaces are usually taken.

At night if it’s after 6 pm all meters are no longer enforced. Also after 6 pm the green or yellow colored curbs are no longer enforced and you can park there until 6/7am (*exceptions apply so always check parking signs). White and Red colored curbs are enforced 24/7 so never park there.

The city has set up parking zones for southside, northside, and west berkeley (see map [Parking:RPPMap - City of Berkeley, CA](http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=9596)). In these areas, cars can only park for 2 hours max from 8am-7pm M-F. However residents can park more than 2 hours if they have a city permit (aka residential preferential parking permit) [RPP: Residential Preferential Parking - City of Berkeley, CA](http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/ContentDisplay.aspx?id=6272)

You’ve probably noticed green 2 hour parking signs in southside and most of them have a circle with a letter ‘I’ on it. This means ‘I’ permit holders can park in the area for longer than 2 hours.
