I just got accepted as a transfer student to UCSB and I was looking at the housing website and it says that they recommend leaving your car at home (which is so not going to happen). Is parking really that big of a problem and if it is does anyone have any recommendations on what I should do? I want to go to UCSB but if I can't bring my car then I am definitely going to look into some of the other schools I was accepted to. Thanks for your help!

It’s generally not a problem, you just have to pay a lot of money. If you’re applying for undergraduate apartments, there is "Where are you applying for housing? The undergraduate apartments "[ample space](http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/hchoices/ugrad-faqs.htm#parking\)" available adjacent to the complexes. If you’re living in Manzanita or San Rafael, you’ll want to get a [22B permit](http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/permStuMainCampus.aspx), although you may want to apply early for this permit. It’s a short walk to San Raf/Manzanita.

An alternative is to street park in Isla Vista (I did this for one quarter living in Manzanita before an off-campus friend offered me his spot) but it’s a pain in the ass. The 6500 blocks are almost always at capacity so you’d probably have to go to the 6600 blocks to have a chance at getting a spot.

I dislike parking here at UCSB.

It doesn’t matter who you are, a visitor or a student, it’s expensive. The enforcement here won’t hesitate to give you a citation for even the smallest infractions. As for me, as a student, to save money I got the cheapest parking spot over in Harder Stadium (still about $300-$400 for the academic year, if I remember correctly) and I have to walk a half hour just to get there. No spontaneous road trips for me.

I’m sure if you are willing to spend the money, you can make parking work for you though. Those who have cars in convenient places tend not to have any problems and some drive pretty often. I’m not sure why they would recommend you leave your car alone, besides simply for the sake of alleviating problems for themselves.

if you live in the undergrad apartments there is parking but you have to pay extra, i think for santa ynez its around 300 for the whole yera and for san clemente i think its included in the rent, but parking in iv is a hassle and people fight for spots, or if you leave a spot someone will take it right away, so some people feel they cant really go anywhere without losing their parking spots

and in the school lots the parking officials come around a lot

I’m a transfer student and would be probably be staying in Manzanita or San Rafael. How is parking at those residence halls? Will I be fighting for spaces even with the parking permit?

Also, I have a soft top Jeep Wrangler…is it likely to get broken into? I never keep anything valuable in there but I still don’t want anyone to cut through my windows. lol
