My question: Is there anywhere near NYU (maybe outside of the city) that I can get a parking permit/spot so that I can have a car nearby (and by 'nearby' I mean accessible through public transportation within 30-40 minutes) in case I need to leave the city?

I ask this because there's no one else who can really take care of/look after my car, especially in the winter - and I rely on it highly to get around (outside of the state).

I would look into Jersey City parking garages for a cheaper alternative to NYC garages. However, it is going to be a LOT of money and I don’t think it’s worth it. Paying thousands of dollars to have access to a car doesn’t make sense.

This is going to present an issue for you. There aren’t any spots for students that are provided by NYU, but there are plenty of parking garages…at a hefty price. Even going to a Jersey or non-Manhattan borough garage is going to be pricey.

You can park on the street in the boroughs but you have to watch the street cleaning signs and move the car accordingly to keep from getting a hefty ticket ($110 the last time I got one and it may be more than that by now)

If there’s no one to watch your car while you’re at school, sell it or garage it near your home and rent a car to leave the city. You will save a lot of money that way.

Agree with Chedva…there is no way that you want to be burdened by a car in NYC on a student’s budget or schedule. Garaging a car near the Village in order to have access to a beach/ country home within driving distance, is a luxury that few NYer’s can afford. But outside of that scenario (and budget), it would be unrealistic to try to park a car nearby.

@Chedva - Thanks for the suggestion, I think I’m going to go with what you say.

Thanks for the replies, everyone, I wasn’t entirely sure of what to expect in parking near/around NY, but I’ve resolved to finding someone to take care of my car near home for the time being!
