I'm an incoming freshman this fall. My dad gave me his old car(he now uses another car). My parents and I live in an apartment area so parking is pretty tight, and we all each have our own car. Should I take my car down to UCSD? I'm leaving on campus, and I plan to walk to class, but there are pros and cons of taking it and leaving it. If I leave it here, then that means it wouldn't be used and it would just gather dust in a garage. If I take it to school, then I have to pay $732 a year for parking. I want to take it to school, but $732 a year is a lot. I want the freedom though. What if I want to explore places or go around San Diego and such? Or what if I want to go home whenever I want, like a random visit to my friends and family. If I don't take the car, then I would have to wait until a weekend to call my parents to come pick me up since my dad doesn't work on weekends. That's an inconvenience. Also, what if I need to go buy supplies or whatever in San Diego? I'm kind of conflicted on what to do.

Too long; didn't read: Do I lose money but get more freedom(which is big to me) and convenience for my needs, or do I save money and be dependent on others(train, bus, parents/other people, etc)?

seriously I’m exactly in the same position!! 800 dollars is sooo lame!..I was thinking of maybe finding a guy with an extra parking spot who lives close to UCSD and pay him aound 400 and park the car there?! if I don’t bring the car, I’d be stuck on the campus all year, I hate taking buses, especially in soCal, without a car you’re crippled!

I think it’s a little less if you buy it by the quarter. I know fall quarter is around $180…X3 would be under $600 if you are not planning on staying for the summer.

I brought my car last year, and I’m bringing it again this year. The parking permit is a lot of money, but I think it’s really nice being able to have a car. You can come and go as you please, go out to eat, or get supplies. San Diego’s public transit is also not that great, and someone correct me if I’m wrong, but a bus pass is no longer included with your student fees. The bus pass is much less than a parking permit though.

Parking on campus is tough though. Don’t even think about leaving between like 10 and 3 because you will have to park across the freeway if you do. With that said, I still think it’s a great thing to have a car

^Parking across the freeway is no problem at all if you live in Warren or Sixth, just as a note.

@smallblock:
so how much is it? and if u have parking permit you are allowed to park on every parking on campus right?
when do u leave the car at nights? does everyone get a special parking spot?

There are special rates your can purchase if you don’t need to park your car seven days of the week. You can look it up on their website.

And I am fairly certain that bus pass are still free atm. They protested and I believe it only stopped because they won their free passes.
