I'm a grad student. Is a Student Commuter Permit convenient enough? Is it worth it to shell out the extra $18 a month for the Preferred parking?

I'll be at the Arts school most of the time. How's the parking situation in Zone 1 (Mesa Structure) or Zone 6?

Does anyone know if there are significantly more spaces for Preferred Commuters than for just regular?

my understanding is that mesa court parking tended to be pretty open (this was before the current parking system…)
in general, its not worth it to shell out the AR permit unless you consistently come to school in the afternoon… when the parking situation is a little worse.

just buy the regular one. if you find it way more convenient to have a preferred, just upgrade.

Thanks flemmyd. I’d be at the Claire Trevor School most of the times, so I’d be looking to park at either the Mesa Parking Structure, or at Lot 14A; both right in front of Anteater Ballpark, and both Zone 1. I’m not a resident at Mesa Court so I don’t believe I’d be able to park at Mesa Court Parking which might be in another zone.

I’m planning on getting to school most days around 10 to 12 AM.

I think I’ll just give regular a month’s shot, and then upgrade if need be.

No need to buy a preferred permit if you park in Mesa Parking Structure. There’s always empty spaces, believe me. Always.

Also - does anyone know about the parking situations in any of the graduate residential communities? Verano Place, Palo Verde, Puerta del Sol, Vista del Campo / Norte, etc.?

What are the procedures vis-a-vis the smog emissions guidelines? Whatever car I get, I’m planning on leaving its registration in my home state, since I won’t be a CA resident - at least for the time being. Is that alright?
