Parking Question!

Hey guys,
I'm a new transfer student, Winter of 2007. The deadline for applying for a parking permit is October 27, so I started the application but then it asks for your first choice parking lot. I have no idea what to choose since I still dont have a place in L.A..& the map also doesn't help that much since I dont know the campus that much!.....
I am looking for a place near campus, Do I have to have Permit or can I just use public transportation?...I live in San Diego, here public transportation sucks!...how is it in L.A?
any suggestions?..Help me out plz!

Thanks

Im assuming your living on campus. No, you don't NEED a car, and getting parking near the dorms (sunset village parking lot?) would be ideal. Come to think of it, it won't matter much where you get parking because you wont be commuting. Public transport isn't horrible but having a car on campus is kinda cool.

questions:
are you living on campus or off campus?

if on campus, which dorm?

if off campus, what's your major?

I'll be living off campus... & my major is Chemical Eng.
so, do i need a parking permit or no?!...Which parking lot should I choose as my fisrt choice??...
thx

depending on how far you are away from campus, you probably wont get a permit. how far away from campus are you? (whats your zip code)

i would probably go with lot 9. closest to south campus since you're ChE.

I still Dont have a place in L.A...I'll be moving in December. on the application says you can put your mailing adress if you still dont have a adress for winter quarter......so do they give you the permit only based on how far you live from campus?

its a point system. if you goto <a href="http://www.transportation.ucla.edu%5B/url%5D">www.transportation.ucla.edu</a>, click on students, and then permits, you can read all about it and exactly how all the points are allocated, etc etc.

if you're a "commuter", you get points based on how far away from campus you are. if you use your san diego address, i dont know how that would work. you'd probably be issued a permit since it would look like you're commuting from SD. but then you would probably have to tell them when you get a place up here though, and they may or may not revoke your permit at that time.

best bet, just call and ask transportation what you should do.

regarding the bus system, i think its pretty good. not my preferred mode of transportation, but it will get you (near) where you need to go most of the time.

Thanks a lot VTECaddict !!
this helped a lot...appreciate it. :)

:) 10characters

Lot 4, Lot 9, Lot 8, and Lot 6 is good for south campus.

:)I guess you know the color code too, VTEC. Shh...
