Parking Questions

My freshman son is bringing his car. He'd like a space in a garage, if at all possible. If I am understanding the UT parking page correctly, there is about an 18 month wait for a garage space once a student is on the waiting list. It appears that the "best" permit he can get at this point is a CN, which is surface during the day and garage at night. I remember reading something about a lottery, but I am confused about how that works.

Would it be a good idea to go ahead and buy the CN permit and then try to get on the garage permit waiting list?

He is going to try to get a garage space at Dobie or Castillian. Should he do this asap, or wait until August (when perhaps they know how much garage space they have available)?

Any other parking advice (other than to tell him not to bring his car : ) ?

Don’t get a CN. The C lots aren’t very well located at all–I think several of them are on the other side of I-35 from most of campus.

There is a lottery for a garage permit, and I’d try that first. After that try Dobie or Castillian–they’re never full.

thanks! 10 char

Anyone can park at Dobie or Castillian or what? Please explain.

Yes, for a price. Students can lease a reserved parking spot at Dobie for the year. It is not cheap. Unreserved spots are also available. I haven’t looked into the Castillian’s policy yet, but I assume it is comparable.

You may want to watch Craigslist. Most of the West Campus apts/condos have reserved parking assigned to each resident. Those without cars often “sublet” their parking spaces.

Thanks for the tip. We’ll start checking.

Every thing has a hefty price tag attached.
