Parking

Where on Tulane campus can you park without a permit? Which lots and and which times?

I don’t think there is anywhere you can park without a permit at all times. I think there are places on the weekends you can. Call whichever office is responsible for issuing permits, they will know.

You can only park on campus without a permit on weekends and I think maybe after a certain time on weekdays. But also remember that if you park somewhere, say after 5 pm, it needs to be moved before I think 7 am or you will get ticketed. You can park on Broadway 24/7 without a permit as long as you don’t park in a place that says No Parking.

I think it’s after 5:30 pm but before 7 am? I would beware parking on campus if you don’t have a permit–parking tickets can be around $100 if you aren’t careful!!

FYI-someone just posted on the Tulane Parents facebook page important info about parking and traffic cameras

OP - Many Tulane Juniors and Seniors live off-campus. Check to see where they park their cars. My D parked on Pine Street, one street over from Broadway. When visiting I always found room on Walnut Street, just across St. Charles.

@Vitrac: Can you post the link to the Tulane Parents facebook page. I just searched it and it didn’t come up. Thanks!

First of all, some of us are not of Facebook so the link doesn’t work. Would somebody be kind enough to cut and paste the info? Second, for what it’s worth, it’s not hard to park just outside of Tulane territory and you can pick the parking depending on where you want to be on campus. For example, last year DD was in Monroe so we parked on Palmer. Just be sure to avoid early morning and 3 PM because there are a bunch of elementary schools there that dismiss at 3ish and there is heavy traffic when parents are picking them up. This year DD is in Willow so we drive down Broadway and park on Broadway or a side street. Only once did we have to circle for five minutes before finding a parking spot.

Lots of posts were cut off. Sorry!

If your student has a car at school, tell them to be aware of the automated camera speed traps all over New Orleans. I am the proud recipient of 3 speeding tickets over the last 2 weeks, for $75.00 each, all at the same location for going from 1 to 9 miles an hour over the speed limit. All three are from the same trap, approximately 5 blocks from campus.
This a link to the locations around town:

They seem to be popping up everywhere. Let us know if you spot one or get caught by one that is not on this map.

Amy Thompson Westmoreland How can they issue a speeding ticket if they don’t know who was driving. My daughter’s car is registered to her dad. So does HE get the ticket if she speeds? Oh, that would go over well…

Amy Thompson Westmoreland My daughter got a parking ticket on Broadway last year for being illegally parked. I had her take pictures and contest by mail. She won. But, they didn’t notify her until after the deadline for paying the ticket. You have to ask for your money back in writing if you’ve already paid the ticket. She did. Back in May. She still hasn’t gotten her money back.

Jim Cronin Two years ago I was in Nola with my daughter and friends. We were in a rental car following another parent and went through a red light (just as it changed). We saw about a dozen flashes. About two months later I saw a transaction on my credit card from hertzrentalfine.com for $30. This was their charge for tracking down my rental information. I was able to locate the “incident” and was able to view pictures and a video of the event. Total cost was about $120 + $30 to Hertz. The driver does not get points but the registered owner or renter is responsible. Not sure of the success in fighting these.

Wendy Johnston This is NOLA. Part of the charm that leaves you shaking your head. If this is the worst trouble our children (ore we) get into we are truely blessed.

Sue Boudreaux Ginsberg There are traffic cameras at intersections all over NOLA. You just have to be aware of where they are. They will snap pictures of cars speeding through the intersection as well as those running a red light. They have been contested but, from what I understand, seldom does anyone win. They were installed in Jefferson Parish as well, but all of those are turned off at present – I think those are off because of kick-back issues or some reason involving who gets $ for what – good ole LA politics. As for someone else driving your vehicle, I think if you can prove that someone else was driving, they are responsible, but good luck doing that!

Sue Boudreaux Ginsberg Oops – Traffic cameras in Jefferson Parish suspended due to: "Redflex Traffic Systems demanded that Jefferson Parish comply with terms of a contract and turn over money the parish owed the Arizona-based company for its services.

Jefferson Parish has been holding the funds in an account while officials assess lawsuits challenging the legality of the cameras and examine the way in which the contract was awarded in 2007."

Steven Threefoot I am unsure how they work in NOLA, but in other juristictions, the ticket is issued to the vehicle and not the driver (no points). The registered owner of the vehicle is responsible for the ticket.

Vicki Harper Davis Hey - I have an idea! SLOW DOWN! Problem solved. 3 tickets in 2 weeks? There seems to be another issue here besides the “simple racket to raise revenue”.

Wendy Johnston Vicki - finally I so agree; there are consequences for actions, you may not lke how NOLA goes about it but you know how they go about it; don’t we want our kids to drive safely???

Martha McCormick Yes, My son was caught on this camera ,also- He deserved that one. Worse for us are the parking tickets that get sent to his home address, way after the date they were due (he claims friends got a few of them and he didn’t know -Hmmm… regardless the tickets more than triple if not paid on time-$120.00!

Linda Perlman Tabach In my county in Maryland we have speed cameras all over the place. The tickets get sent to the person who the car is registered to. At least ours aren’t too expensive, about $40. In DC if you get caught by a speed camera your fine is $125.00.

Frank Jones We just received our 4th one within the last 2 weeks, all for 1-9 mph over the limit, all from the same camera, all taken over a month ago. If we had gotten one within a day or two after it was issued, I wouldn’t have such a problem, at least we would know to avoid the area or to slow way down. How many more are on their way to me? Do I have 30 or 35 coming? I’m at $300.00 now. My understanding is that in most other jurisdictions, the cameras are set from 5 to 9 miles an hour over the limit before they go off, which seems reasonable. I’m not paying. We’ll see what happens.

Susan Boehl Metcalf ‎"the speed traps are now considered unconstitutional if you challenge them in any court they will remove the ticket because they can’t prove who was driving the car."

Linda Perlman Tabach I think some people are claiming they are unconstitutional because there is no way to face one’s accuser in court since there is no accuser.

Frank Jones I have heard the same argument but NOLA has tried to circumvent this by changing the offense from criminal to civil. I can’t fight it in court because I live 6 hours away. If you receive a ticket from an actual officer it is still criminal. They are trying every underhanded trick in the book to collect this money. By making it civil, it also makes it where they can’t swear out a warrant for me. They can only try to collect the money through collection agencies which basically have no teeth.
