Parochial, Private, Public Why Such A Dropoff?

I have been reading recent statistics, and the results were quite schocking. I would say that more kids go to parochial schools then private, and public schools lead by far. Needless to say the results were pretty consistent at:
65% public
30% private
5% parochial

Why such a drop-off for parochial students? Does anyone know of a religious bias?

If you are talking about high schools then your stats are way off: public schools enroll 88%, private 12% of which the majority is parochial. If you are taling about admits to a particular college, then it would depend on which college and the composition of their applicant pool. I'd be pretty sure that Notre Dame is a lot more than 5% parochial.

I agree with nervousmommy non-public schools make up ~10%

I read that concerning Dartmouth, the private seemed super high. Well, they also boast about 40% acceptance for legacies, so I'm sure it's quite distorted.

i'd bet that whatever percentage of schools are private and whatever percentage are parochial are wrong, too. I went to a catholic school and when we were filling out any type of forms, our guidance department always instructed us NEVER to fill in parochial for type of school and ALWAYS fill in private or independant. I'm sure my school wasn't the only one.
