Parsons/CalArts?

i have recently been admitted into both calarts and parsons for photography but do not know what program is better or which one to choose. i also have been admitted into the school of visual arts but i prefer calarts and parsons. any advice??

Good Luck, I recently got rejected to Parsons. End of story.

I think you also need to think about where you want to be. CalArts, a great school, but really in the middle of no-where. I know it is about an hour out of LA, but given traffic, etc, it is a very long hour. Parsons, in the middle of “The City” has a completely different feel. I don’t know if this is important to you, but for me, it could make a big difference (I am not the student though, but a mom–jmho). Congratulations on such good choices!

They have very different approaches. Cal Arts is conceptual and Parsons is more geared towards commercial work. They are on opposite sides of the spectrum.

lizzy - Have you decided? Do you need more info?

What work inspires you?

yes please more info. i am wanting to do i think more fine art photography and photojournalism. is one school better than the other and which one is the higher ranked for art colleges? i am an international student so do not know very much on either. thanks for all the replies

Everyone I know at Parsons is trying to get out, and fast. The school is not very strong for true fine art, however, it is okay for design. CalArts is MUCH more competitive to be accepted in to than Parsons. CalArts runs about a 26% acceptance rate, where Parsons’ is 70%. CalArts is ranked number one by Newsweek for most artistic college. It ranks higher than both RISD and Cooper Union. If I were you, I would go to CalArts if you are more interested in fine art, as opposed to say fashion photography. If you are more interested in photojournalism, Parsons may be a better fit, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Agreed with -Contemporary.
Friend of mine sister is at Parsons but is taking a 1year break from all the stress there.

If you’re looking into photojournalism. Western Kentucky University is the place to be. I know it sounds random, but it’s the #1 school for PJ. I’m currently a photojournalism/advertising double major there. The photography courses are super intense, the professors are amazing, and the students are incredibly talented. Also, the whole photo department is like a giant family. Well, not giant. Rather small. Many students change majors after the first year because it is more intense than you’d think. BUT IT’S FUN. Also, you get awesome connections just by being there. Some of my friends are interning at places like the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and The New York Times this summer.
