I've always been interested in fashion. I've already been accepted into SCAD but I really want to live in NYC. I just started taking art classes this year and I have a couple of still lifes that are really good. However, I've been reading that Parsons wants unique art that has an "it" factor to it. So what exactly are they looking for then?? Still lifes aren't terribly interesting. Also, am I allowed to have a couple fashion sketches or creative art pieces? Or do they just want still lifes?? Also my cumulative (non weighted) GPA from freshman-junior year is a 3.9 and my GPA currently is a 4.7 I got around a 1650 on the SATs. Do you think I'll get in? Please help!!!

They are looking for talent. Pure and simple.

I suggest as mentioned to us when my S was applying (he was ultimately accepted to a top notch program) - Show the range of your talent, select your best work and be original.

He had sculpture, watercolor, graphic design and illustration in his portfolio. The reviewer said it was refreshing to see, she had just spent 30 min looking at some very excellent paintings but they all looked the same - all landscape paintings. I think she was bored by it.

So I suggest showing what you can do and then showing how your mind works through your originality. Your grades and SAT are no problem at all.

Honestly, I think your stats are fine. Also, don’t worry too much about it because Parsons now has an acceptance rate hovering around 60%. I know some pretty untalented people who got in. Just keep drawing, experiment and also if you are stronger in one medium than another, show more pieces in that medium.

hm… I wonder if I’m too late to say anything…I’m very new to this site. I was trying to figure out how to post a new thread or forum, whatever it is called because I needed some help. But hi Since you are a junior, you have enough time to prepare for your portfolio. I have been accepted to parsons for fall 2013. So I can give you some few tips on preparing your portfolio.
Ok. So for your GPA and SAT, you are perfectly fine. Your GPA is very high and above average parson’s admission and your SAT score is right on the average mark. I know this because I went to their tours and they told me their average score is around 1600. But since you still have time you can try to get a higher SAT score to get more scholarship money and financial aid. And you GPA is very high so good job :). Anything over a 3.0-3.2 is very good. Also GPA + good portfolio= more scholarships.
So yes even the bad portfolios that are basic and lack skills can get accepted but it is better to create an outstanding portfolio that will help you get a definite spot for admission and scholarships.
For the portfolio. you should have about 8-12 pieces of whatever and 3 challenge pieces. They are a home test that the school gives to see your creativity. So basically the 3 challenge pieces should be the most outstanding, creative pieces in your portfolio. You can search “parsons portfolio examples” on google but most are outdated. And most are very plain, but keep looking because sometimes you’ll notice really interesting pieces.
I also applied for fashion design and you can submit fashion sketches however your entire portfolio shouldn’t consist of fashion sketches. You should have a maximum of 3 sketches and no more. They want to see if you can handle the first year at parsons which is an intense fine arts curriculum.
Also your portfolio put in observation works and add some twists to them. Make a boring still life unique and interesting.
And you can have artwork based from your imagination as long as you have a strong understanding of the subject your painting/drawing. So have reference pictures with you when you do this.
And you can get full scholarship to parsons if your portfolio is outstanding

Edinburgh and Leeds in UK both have good programs

I’m going to Parsons for the fall semester as a freshman. I do think Mada is right, they look for talent specifically. I don’t think Parsons is an easy school to get into. It’s selective in terms of art. Strangely I got in with a decent scholarship. You won’t believe this but my Highschool GPA was a 1.9 and my ACTs were a 21. Not too good - actually it’s god awful, who am I kidding. But I think you have a high chance of getting in because of your grades and scores, you would literally have to be a complete novice in your field of art to get denied with those grades. Anyways best of luck maybe Ill see you in Parsons! Here’s my portfolio to help you out a bit. I’m a fine arts major I think.
