Bearing in mind that diversity comes in many forms, describe aspects of your personal history that will help you contribute to Rochester's diversity.

do they mean diversity outside of being non-caucasion; or if we are chinese should we write about it.... what are some of things people on the board wrote about...

i wrote about being russian, tho im beginning to think it's a very cliched thing to do... but diversity is anything, pretty much.. you can probably take some EC you do, anything from student government to political clubs to probably even science competitions/clubs and write about the percpective it gives you..

i actually also wrote about being from another country. But i dont believe that that alone is sufficient. I also included things like knowing 4 languages, living in a very diverse neighborhood and keeping contact with people of many different ethnicities. Then, i described how all of this has impacted me as a person and in turn, how i impacted my community (tutotring english...etc.)

There's a multitude of things you can talk about that are not race related. If you have different religious beliefs than your family/most of the other peole you know....that makes you unique and different, and thus, more diverse. Further, if you ever had to stand up for your beliefs (not just religious) because most of the people surrounding you were of a different opinion, thats diversity. If you have a particular disability or are handicapped, you can definetely taylor that into an essay. If you're really comfortable about it and are gay/lesbian, you can write about that and how it impacted your life/people around you. If you belong to a particular minority group (not just racial)....goth etc., you can write about that. If you posess any special talents that make you different and unique, go for that. Hope this helps.

lol.. i just reread my diversity essay, and i thought it was a lot worse than it actually is

i realized that i wrote more on the topic of what jersh55 was talking about.. while it was generally about being russian, i wrote more about how i was different in that i had a mother that made me do extra work, and how it has affected me positively..

I just talked about being catholic and my big switch from public to catholic school, and basically how the transition affected me and my reaction to it might not have been the same as someone else's. I also talked about being a girl wanted to major in Computer Engineering which is mainly a male dominated field.
