What do you guys think of getting a part-time job? Will it be considered as an OK EC?
Will colleges consider unpaid internship experience at civil groups more valuable than money earning job experience?
I was thinking of getting a part time job to be somewhat financially independent, but many of my peers say that's waste of time and they'd do some meaningful internship which will help them get in good colleges.
I'm stuck. What do you guys think?

It depends what the rest of your resume looks like, though both are good. They both demonstrate responsibility and commitment. That being said if you have a ton of community service I would go for the job (but it also depends how much you need the money), if you are lacking in community service and/or the place of the internship directly relates to your passions and/or intended major I would go for the internship.

Right now I’m doing volunteer work of teaching kids from low-income families, and I’m the editor in chief of a student magazine that deals with human rights and social issues. Do I need to do more activities related to community service? I’m thinking of majoring in pol sci and international relations, so i guess internship at civil groups might help. But I thought showing financial responsibility is also important since I’ll probably apply for financial aid. I agree that both are valuable experience… ughhh hard to decide.
Thanks for sharing your idea!

afaik showing financial responsibility and financial aid have no direct correlation in your chances of admittance in a given school

you are probably set on community service. ask yourself this: do i want my own personal income or do i want to advance my experience regarding civil groups? (theres no correct answer; it is all your personal opinion)

personally if i had to pick one i think the internship is better but as someone said both demonstrate responsibility and commitment.

Assuming you like both equally, I’d go with the internship. Both demonstrate commitment, but part-time jobs are very common for teenagers. Internships are not.

Actually, at my school, kids do great activities regarding community service in order to build their resumes, but almost none of them spend time earning money by themselves… it’s pretty ironic, considering that part time jobs are usually more common while internships are not, as you said ;)

I know having an internship sounds more impressive. But I think a job is the way to go. Having a job shows your maturity and that you work hard for what you want all the time, not just in school. Unless the internship applies to something that really interests you or applies directly to your intended major, I’d skip the internship and go for the part time job. And really, it feels great to have your own money that you know you earned:)

Ya I think the primary reason of getting a part time job is to earn your own allowances…!
