My daughter will need some spending money for herself and for books after I pay tuition bills. She does not qualify for work-study. I wonder what sort of part-time job opportunities are available for the students at the school or near the school that she can safely get to and from. Do a lot of the students work part-time?

Yes, lots of them. My kids never qualified for work-study, and neither had any trouble finding jobs that enhanced their college experience in addition to earning money. My older kid found so many jobs that the University had to cut her off – she had crossed the line into counting technically as a full-time employee. At her apogee she was working four different jobs: a paid research position, doing editing/layout, a writing internship, and working at one of the on-campus coffee houses that effectively served as the clubhouse for her social group. My other kid isn’t that greedy, but he gets paid for work he would (and does) do for free for one of his ECs. Off-campus jobs are not hard to find, either. Almost all of their friends work part time somewhere, although I think that there are plenty of students who don’t.

Wow, JHS. Thank you so much for that info. I like that they actually get to do jobs where they get valuable experience in addition to earning money. My daughter currently does editing/layouts and blogs in an unpaid internship and also for writes for her school paper. She is also interested in doing research in college so this is good!

She should consider working for the admissions office! The admissions office starts hiring every winter quarter…

If your D has programming skills, there are always folks looking for web design/maintenance, etc. S had a non-work study job lined up the day he arrived on campus.

I wouldn’t say that ‘lots’ of kids have part time jobs here. Maybe one in four? (based on personal experience, mind you) In any case, I know that there are jobs available on campus for non-work study students. Indeed, I found one of them – I’m a library aide at the Lab Schools.

As long as your daughter starts looking as soon as school begins (better yet, a few weeks before) I have confidence that she’ll find a job within the first two weeks of school. Good luck!

This has listings for on and off campus non-work study jobs, as well as work-study jobs. Its how I found my current work-study job, and the listings are updated pretty frequently.

Thank you Natalie. This is helpful
