I am really interested in Duke and I feel that I have a fair chance of being admitted. However, I need to have fun while at college.... so my question is how easy is it to use fake ids at clubs and parties at Duke? Do the clubs scan? Thanks

Whatever the deal is, I cannot imagine that underclassmen could not get into parties with alcohol. I wouldn't worry about it.

does the same hold true for all colleges?

I believe our wide and varied party scene is one of the best in the country....from off campus frat houses to numerous clubs/bars with dancing to tailgates where liquor flows, literally to drinking in dorm rooms (on west and our "dry" east), getting alcohol and partying hard is never an issue. also, i know a lot of people who use fakes....i haven't heard of them getting scanned lately, but don't do stupid things like try to use it early in the evening at an empty bar, etc....

basically, there are people who never go out, people that go out til 5 when they have 8:30's the next morning, people who go out on weekends, people who party every night.....everyone's represented here.

I also agree that there is always a lot going on socially. You never really need an ID at all to get into clubs (they're all 18+), and you can just get someone with a fake to buy you alcohol once you're there. Some clubs are even more lenient--I went to one where they just made a mark on my hand so I just washed it off in the bathroom and was able to get alcohol. At frat parties you can get any alcohol without being carded at all and at tail-gates and in K-Ville, you can be carrying beer openly as a minor and nobody can or will do anything about it. Basically, alcohol is not a problem and there are a good number of options for going out.

theres no problem at all. last year i visited, i was 16 and really young looking, without a fake ID, and my sister got me into two of the bars without a problem. they really didnt care at all.

you never need an ID to get into a club or party. actually, i was at some frat party one of the first weekends of school and they marked the hands of those under 21, but when someone used a fake they laughed and said that it was just for show. the marks ultimately meant nothing except for the brothers reminding you not to be walking around section w/ cans or bottles and to keep the drink in the solo cup. otherwise, getting into parties and clubs is never a problem. i don't have a fake ID, and i manage by upperclassmen friends or friends with fakes to either make beer runs or to go to the liquor store and pregame. the clubs never scan IDs, and on busy nights, they don't really scrutinize the ID. i don't even think they're technologically advanced enough to scan IDs (most of the clubs are actually restaurants w/ good bars that after 11 on weekends they turn into a dance club) they tend to give wristbands to those over 21, but i've been bought drinks at clubs w/ no wristbands and it's never been a problem. partying at chapel hill in my experience has been a little stricter.

i've read that the duke management is "reforming" its party-image [a couple of years back] and boosting its academic appeal as well. did that affect the social scene at all?

when i visited duke in the fall i attended the female rugby teams semi nude chocolate pudding wrestling party off campus with no id. trust me, the normal duke parties allowed all of the pre-frosh access to everything. i felt like duke was overly party school which is kind of why i'm not sure i'd be able to focus there.

Haha not really. I mean there are parties but I definitely wouldn't call it an "overly party school" (if anything, there need to be some improvements to social life). I think that your visiting on that specific weekend and attending that party might have skewed your perspective. I mean Duke is fun but there are PLENTY of kids who like never go out (I don't know if that's a good thing...?).
