but you don’t HAVE to be involved in a “bazillion extracurrics”. If they get in the way of studying/mess up your gpa, they aren’t worth it.

im pre-med so i kinda have to. a 4.0 and 35 MCAT just dont cut it anymore, they want to see “involvment”

well “involvement” isn’t going to help you when you have a 3.0 gpa or less from not studying…

What I’m saying is, don’t join a crap load of organizations just for the “involvement” aspect. Join stuff because it’s either relevant to your major (like a pre-med society, etc) or because you really enjoy the activity (intramural sports, social organizations). But you don’t NEED a bunch of them like in high school, you just need like 2 that you are REALLY involved in, like you advance up the latter to being an officer.

You need more than a couple. I talked to my doctor, who used to be an adcom for my school’s med school, and extracurriculars are absolutely crucial. They want to see constant involvement. The competition for med school is just outrageous.

I guess you could get by on only two if you did them for the entire 4 years of undergrad. Like volunteered at a hospital for the entire time and was a member of big brother big sister. But they’d like to see more.

Yeah, I don’t know many pre-meds who party much. But I will say I manage research, studying, and about 4 extracurriculars and have PLENTY of time to party. Although I’m not trying to keep a med school-worthy gpa :)

i have been wondering all night how to manage this…
im a pre-med engineer …doing research/involved in a couple organizations i care about a lot…hence… a lot of time goes into them and i have very little free time…i’ve realized that i dont go out …ever…im a little irritated at myself because im missing out on college a bit…but now that it has been an entire semester(almost) i have kind of established myself as someone who never has any fun and now i rarely know what is going on…and i def. dont want that to be the case…

helpmegetin! … free up time in your schedule.

yeah…im working on it…
