Parties at Columbia??

“So basically If I want to get wasted every Friday and Saturday night with other students will I have that opportunity on campus?”

Yeah, I mean, that’s what I do pretty much. To me, that idea of playing beer pong, flip cup, and dancing is very fun, but I think the problem is that here people often feel as though they need to get out into the city more and check stuff out. I am only a freshman though and I feel like people are just immediately trying to take full advantage of being in the city. I agree that once people move into suites, that kind of hanging out will be much more popular.

As far as the laid-back atmosphere…no I am not from the west coast, I actually come from New England. It is definitely hard to explain. I think Denzera is right about people not being arrogant, but I think people do take themselves a little too seriously. I’m not gonna lie–I have a bit of a skewed example of things since I am only really friends with the people on my floor (I’m working on changing that)–but people are CONSTANTLY studying and they only seem to take a break like one night a week. I have constantly found myself reminding them to keep things in perspective; we’re only gonna be freshmen once and its gonna get worse from here. I just realized a few days ago that a lot of schools I looked at said things like “we know how to work hard, but we also know how to party hard”–I don’t actually remember ever hearing that about columbia. But I mean, its hard to explain. Like you’ll find out anywhere you go, there are all different types of people here. And i don’t mean to sound like I don’t like Columbia–I absolutely love it, but the entire atmosphere does get a little intense and that isn’t helped by a pretty hard-working student body. I know at least that I know how to have fun and I’m fairly certain that I’m not the only one. I come from a town that drinks heavily on the weekends–a lot of people here do not.

I agree, it’s not a “party school”, but once you and your group of friends hit 21 (or get fakes), going to bars is a lot more enjoyable than most lets-get-■■■■■■■■ frat parties i’ve been to at more rural schools.

highfiver, frankly - and reasonable people can disagree - Columbia’s take-academics-seriously atmosphere had a lot of appeal to me. I like how they’re not just a sports factory that happens to teach a few classes. There are plenty of nerd schools out there, though, where the atmosphere practically IS all work and no play, and Columbia’s really not one of them. I knew plenty of guys who got wasted a couple of times a week, but sunday through thursday they were busting ass on their classes and activities.

Maybe I can sum it up with: Columbia students have more fun when they’re doing something than when they’re drinking something. That something they’re doing could be sports, politics, social activities, or even classwork, but everyone likes to DO stuff.

^^ I agree with Denz. There’s a lot of social diversity and plenty of opportunities to get drunk and party.

People take academics seroiusly, yes, but that doesn’t mean that they only work and don’t play. It’s not black and white. Sooner or later you’ll also discover (and hopefully you’ve already figured it out) that students go to Columbia for the other things that NYC has to offer: great restaurants, museums, political events, concerts, everything. I know it’s hard to believe, but drinking all the time gets boring after a while :)

If I sound like a prude with the statement above, I’ll have you know that I threw several very successful parties in my time :)
