Parties at ND

How are the parties at Notre Dame? I know students are going to get a lot of work, but on Fridays and Saturdays are there some good parties? I know that it is a Catholic school too, so does that limit the amount of drinking? How many people usually go to the parties (like below 50 or above 50). Anything to describe the party scene would help a lot.

By the way, I'm not a huge party guy, but at college I want to have some fun.

Lots of dorm parties since there are no frats or sororities. Space limits size, so practice is to go from party to party, or just stay with a group of friends. Lots of off-campus parties, but since freshmen are required to live on campus first year, it will take a little while to meet older students or friends with older sibs/friends off-campus. Official functions are dry. Over-21"s are allowed to possess alcohol even in dorms, so it’s hard to control. Little heavy drug use on campus, ND is very serious about that. Admin lenient about drinking to keep students on campus since South Bend police are not very understanding and will ticket/arrest. Also, keeps students from driving after they have been drinking, but no big entertainment area near campus with restaurants and clubs anyway - we make our own fun and there’s always something happening. Staff tries to keep an eye out for anyone who has had too much and needs care. Some freshmen take a while to figure out the party-study balance, but most do so by midterms. Heaviest partying is on weekends, but there is always something going on. You can have a lot of fun without pressure to drink, but there can be a lot of it at parties.

There are a lot of parties every weekend, and Notre Dame is a wet campus. Hard liquor isn’t “allowed,” but few RAs in male dorms seem to care and students and parties have a lot of it, in addition to beer. Partying is most intense after a home football game (unless it’s a bad loss).

The amount of people at a party will depend upon the location. It’s usually a bunch of people packed into a common room, and I’ve seen up to maybe 75 fit in one of the largest, but I’ve never counted, so I could be off. Most male dorms will have multiple parties each weekend, so as newdomer93 said, you can just move around between rooms and dorms. Girls always get in free, sometimes guys from other dorms have to pay a cover charge, but that seems to be less common than letting everyone in free, at least from what I’ve seen.

Off campus parties are either at individuals’ apartments or one of the various sport “houses.” I’ve never wanted to leave campus for one, but most of my friends have and they seem to enjoy them. Those are typically larger, from what I hear.

I’ll mention that there are plenty of things to do other than drinking and hard partying, though that is what seems to interest you. There’s something for everyone.
