So I was set on going to UC Irvine for months (assuming I got in), but I visited UC Davis this week and really liked it (possibly more than UCI). Anyway, what I'm getting at is.....

Is UCI really a commuter school--is it totally dead in the dorms on the weekends? I live less than an hour from UCI, but would still like to know.

What's the party scene like at UCI? Do you really have to go out of your way to find them?

What's the general consensus from UCI students? Do you like UCI, is it easy to meet people, and that type of thing?

UCI is, sadly, a commuter school. I'm from NorCal so I never leave the dorms on the weekends, but, at most, half of my dorm will go home for the weekend. Weekends are still relaxing and fun, although it can get pretty dead. It really depends on the population of your dorm, however. If you have a dorm full of NorCal people, you'll have more staying at the dorms. Or if you have a bunch of people who don't want to go home, you will have more staying at the dorms. Most of the time, people like you (living about an hr away) will go home on the weekends, haha. There's always someone to hang out with on the weekend though.

I'm only a freshman so I don't know too much about parties. From what I've seen, people go to a bunch of frat/sorority parties or go to clubs. I've also encountered many parties held by students in apartments. The party scene here is most likely better than UCD.

The general consensus is...I love UCI :D. Meeting people is directly proportional to how social/outgoing you are. You basically receive how much you give to your experience in college.

word, jas0n, word. On a sunny breezy saturday, as one strolls across the campus, one can see tumbleweeds flying across the lawn and the lone note of a harmonica being played lazily. haha jk but its pretty empty here on weekends. damn

I am a UCD student, and I suggest you post your question over in the UCD forum as well. I would respond to you in greater detail there dude. Let me just say that UCD is off the hook!

I think jas0n did a very good job of summing up what UCI is like, from the social aspect.

Some things I would like to add though. Once you make friends with people that have cars, you'll love it. After being stranded at the campus for a week or two, you'll love being able to get in a car and exploring the surrouding area.

The party scene is not too hard to find. It depends on where you're dorming. I know that my friend's dorm in Valimar is so wild, while my dorm in Isla is so quiet. Also during your welcome week, most of the fraternities will be throwing parties to recruit people, and you can find out more about the parties there.

i am def. diggin' uci i gotta say. i haven't even "partied" that much. but people here are so chill and i am not complaining. its not as easy to find parties, especially since i live in the technology hall (nerd CENTRAL) but they are there.

Sure Henry. You know you want to join one ;o. Hey blinkblink, are you in Cascada?! I'm in Barranca, and I'm looking at your hall right now through my window.

Yes, UCI is, for the most part, a commuter school. However, as Jas0n pointed out, there are some exceptions. (NorCal people and Campuswide Honors students usually don't go home on weekends.)

To me, though, this isn't a bad thing, because, as an Honors student, I like my quiet study time. I have no problem not being extremely social on the weekend.

Party scene? Haha, well, I wouldn't be the best person to ask (see #1), but, as far as I can tell, parties...do exist here. As on any college campus, there are always people willing to drink /party, so you'd probably not have a problem finding them.

I like UCI, mainly because of the Honors program. The deciding factor for me was said program; I could have gone to Berkeley or even UCLA, but the CHP was too excellent an option for me to turn down. It's worth checking out if you're interested in enhancing your experience here, both socially and intellectually.

oh barranca jason? yeah thats like right there. is that one of the newer dorms? cascada is and i freakin love it. its so spacious and waaay nicer than middle earths and the shower is good. my dorming situation is pretty dandy.

man..jason maybe weve seen each other around and not even know it! i'm the asian girl with long black hair and slanty eyes. :)

Yea, Barranca is one of the newer phases at Mesa. I love it so much haha. I stayed in a Phase 2 (Otero) dorm during SPOP and thought that was going to be me in the future. Luckily, I got placed into this super spacious dorm :].

If you guys ever want to meet up, just leave a message. I have two other fellow CCers in my dorm :].

Like everyone has said, most dormies go home and if not they just chill around campus. If you live outside of the dorms (im a junior) there are a ton of things to do - surfing being a big one. You just have to go out and find things to do - its not like Davis where the only thing you can do is each other or the cows...no offense, Davis is rad, but what I dont understand is more people like bashing UCI for having no city when Davis is in the middle of nowhere.

Anywho, youre better off choosing which school has the better major for you. The social life is for the most part determined by you and your group of friends.

hey guys, we SHOULD have a cc meet heh. anyways, ppl in Barranca/Jardin/etc isnt it a bee-atch to walk to commons? i visited my friend in selva and it took forever to get to the commons.

yeah the walk can be annoying. especially to class and all but its good for you! i hate commons food anyway. i can only eat there once a day. i am going to have so many extra meals by the end of the quarter.

maaan middle earth dorms are like half the size of mine here.

a cc meeting? hahaha i think that could be awkward. it'd be like, "soo...sup. did you see what the davis kids posted about us today!?!?" lol jk
