I am a current high school senior that got accepted early decision and I am curious about how most parties go freshman year at Duke. I have a couple questions so if you want to PM or respond back in the thread, either would be very helpful.

How much alcohol is available? Is it usually just cheap beer or is there harder/better stuff there too?

How hard is it to get over to the other campus and go to frat parties over there?

Are there good parties only on weekends or weekdays too?

Alcohol is abundant to freshman. These frats need new pledges to survive, so they throw as much cheap alcohol as they can at these kids. Just remember, you’ll be paying for it in dues in your upperclassman years if you decide to go greek. And yes, its mostly all cheap beer (busch light) and vodka (aristocrat).

Incredible easy. Most of your classes will be on West Campus and you’ll be living on East Campus, meaning you’ll be used to the bus system, where a bus runs every 5-10 minutes.

Mostly weekends for open parties, but there are definitely weekday parties, just more rare. Biggest nights are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. You won’t see much on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday.

Parties are very accessible first semester. Flyers literally direct you from the bus stop to the party. From what I’ve heard, things get more exclusive second semester with rush and pledging.

Plenty of alcohol is available. It’s usually just cheap beer and Aristocrat vodka. For huge section parties I would recommend getting there toward the beginning of the party though, because tons of freshmen go to those. During times that I went late they had run out of alcohol.

How hard is it to get over to the other campus and go to frat parties over there?
I’ll admit that if there’s a HUGE section party on West, the buses get frustratingly crowded, and you might have to wait for another bus before you can manage to get on…but it’s not a huge deal.

Are there good parties only on weekends or weekdays too?
There are good parties on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Personally I’ve had more fun on the weekdays than on the weekends because the parties have the perfect amount of people (not too few, not too many) and aren’t clusterf**ks. That’s just me though.

Serious, why were people like you accepted while more deserving ones were rejected/deferred? You just got accepted and the first thing you think about is the amount of illegal alcohol available?

What makes you think that I am not deserving or that this is the first thing that I thought about? I am actually very well qualified (2250+ sat, 12 ap classes and only 1 b, 5’s on all ap tests, school involvment, etc.) so please do not rush to judge others. And alcohol was in fact the third thing I thought about, the first was the classes I will be taking next year, and the second was all the pretty duke girls I would get the chance to meet. I didn’t realize asking an innocent question could be so antagonizing.

OH NO GUYS, THIS KID WANTS TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CONSUMING FOR 10,000 YEARS. BETTER CALL THE COPS! Because the law is always the pinnacle of moral thought, and we can’t think for ourselves and make our own judgments, right?

This thread has rapidly degenerated, I’m sad to say. We are not here to judge questions…the incoming class is going to want to know the answers to those original questions anyway, since it’s such an ingrained part of the university.

Two of my friends that currently go there say that while it doesn’t flow like the fountains of Valhalla, alcohol is by no means difficult to get. If you look at all, you will find it

Placidos is a user on here that was bashing the ED accepted students–he was telling us all to transfer because Duke was a terrible school, and **** like that.

I think he’s a jaded rejectee, to be honest.
