Whats the social scene like at GW? the actual social scene not the school sponsored stuff, i mean like the drinking and frats and whatnot

its there if you want it. hint: if you do, live in thurston.

gw's social life is perfect because it's there if you want it but if you don't it's no big deal. if you're going to be a freshman and want to be part of the social scene then try to live in Thurston, it's the largest and most social freshman dorm. greek life contributes significantly to the social scene but there are also tons of bars and clubs.

I currently go to GW and honestly, if you want to party, you will... But, if you don't, you won't. I am sure this sounds like everything you have ever heard but I live in Thurston and I am not too big into the drinking scene and I still love it here.

GW social scene is great in my opinion. You have access to this whole great city and there is something out there for everyone. I am sure this sounds very ideal and that you hear this from everyone, but its true.

Agree 100% with Timmer224 and emm 118. There is a social scene for everyone depending on what your preferences are.

I'm not way into the party scene but still enjoy fun with friends or the occasional frat party or not. I'm glad I chose not to live in Thurston with how crazy it can be there sometimes. I much prefer being elsewhere on Foggy Bottom and able to walk a couple blocks to Thurston/frat/whatever if that's what I want to do that night. And if not, having a pretty quiet dorm is nice (especially when you get sick!).

What dorm do you live in?? Or are you a prospective student??

If you get accepted, do you get a choice of dorms or do they place you? If you don't want to live in Thurston, what would be the next best choice?

waveswatcher:
You will be give a choice of up to 7 dorms, and they will make you fill a short questionaire, and will try to match according to what your basic habits are.
If you are not happy witht the dorm, and find somebody who wants to swap it is possible to do so if not before, or after the 3rd week of school. I hope it helps you

Mitchell if you want a single. Otherwise, I think Madison is nice

I live in Lafayette. Assuming you don't want to live on the Vern (you don't), your choice should really be between it and Thurston, depending on what kind of life you want at GW.

Madison is pretty nice, Crawford is pretty cramped.

I live on the Vern and although I really didn't want to at first, I really love it now and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. It's a great freshman experience and your social life won't be affected because you live on the Vern. We still have parties up here and we go down to parties in Thurston and other dorms, too. It's not a big deal. Our rooms are also nicer than any of the other freshman housing and most sophomores will say that our rooms are even better than their dorms, too.

But when you live on the Vern don't you feel kind of different from the other GW students who don't live there? I mean, don't you feel like you're on the outside looking in?

Not at all. You kind of get the best of both worlds. You get to participate in everything on the Foggy Bottom campus (and we do!) and you get to know people on that campus, but you also are part of a community on the Vern that upperclassmen will tell you is still a bonding experience after freshman year. We have our own programming council, events at least every Wednesday, special priveleges at Eckles, Language Cafe, lots of free stuff, etc. Something else that is really nice is that you really get to know the staff up here. I know almost everyone who works in the library, the cafeteria, the mailroom, etc. and much of the administration, which is something you don't have on Foggy Bottom. You also get priority registration for classes offered on the Vern (or incoming freshmen for Fall registration I think get priority for any class before any other freshmen) and we have the pool, soccer fields, tennis courts, etc.

you won't feel different....you'll just slowly be driven insane from riding the shuttle or sitting on it waiting for it move or waiting for it to come at all.

So what is the general consensus about the Vern? When I visited it I really liked it...I like to party, etc. but I don't really drink...I've heard the Vern is kinda quiet in terms of parties. Is the social life nonexistent there?

Yeah, same question. I was kind of overwhelmed when I visited the Foggy Bottom campus and the Mt. Vernon campus was like a breath of fresh air, it was so calm. I really liked it but I'm afraid that I'll be left out socially. I was thinking about maybe joining a sorority. Would that help?

I know both people who do and don't drink on the Vern. If you don't drink, it is not hard to find either like-minded people or hang out with friends who have decided not to drink for that evening or weekend or whatever and you will still be welcome at parties. If you do like to drink/party, it is also not hard to find parties on the Vern or go with a group of people from the Vern to Thurston. I know lots of people who are on the Vern who are in sororities and they really like it. They often have at least one, sometimes two, parties hosted by a sorority or a fraternity to go to almost every weekend and they definitely know tons of people both on the Vern and Foggy Bottom.

speaking of sororities and fraternities, i know that the greek life at GW isn't like crazy active but it's there...i heard that there are like almost double the number of social frats than sororities? is that true? because i feel like that would be weird in terms of how each frat is usually paired up with a sorority....
