party scene at williams

comments? how is it without frats or sororities?

Pretty active.

There were parties, it seemed, all three nights I was there.

Within the first half hour of getting on campus, I went to a party. Since it's isolated, there's not much else to do.

Drinking is everywhere. Themed parties are pretty cool.

What is there to do besides drink? D was very excited about going to Williams and now is having second thoughts as she is afraid that kids do nothing but drink. What is there to do for someone who is social and athletic but doesn't drink and isn't comfortable around the party scene?

There's the drinking, and then there's the nature.

I got a huuuge athletic vibe there. The surrounding area is fabulous for hiking and a lot of students do sporty things for social get-togethers too, it seems.

kbabymom, There is PLENTY to do at Williams for non-drinkers or light drinkers. Every weekend there are dozens of events social, arts-related, sporty -- activities to suit a wide range of interests.

Has your daughter overnighted? I think that's the best way to get an honest appraisal of whether or not the environment is the right place for her.

Social and athletic (or outdoorsy) are apt descriptors for Williams kids who are often involved in multi-faceted activities and interests. For example I spoke to my son who is a Junior Advisor recently. He said his Saturday night included having a picnic of Indian takeout with a group of friends, Sunday night was writing a paper, playing squash with a friend and getting together with his entry for TV and snacks.

The image of the drunk athlete is a much over-played stereotype that you only hear from kids and parents and parents of kids who don't actually attend Williams. There are definitely a small group wild kids on campus who abuse acohol, but these are by no means in the majority.

I'm sure this opinion is going to engender a barrage of references to anti-social behavior as noted by the Williams Record. If you or your daughter have any further questions please PM me.

It's true. The students lie. The student newspaper lies. The college's own survey lies. The administration, that is spending $4.8 million next year to deal with their "party problem", lies. The college's Buildings and Grounds department lies. The 30% of heavy drinkers, who don't wait for a party, lie. It's all lies.

Don't trust them.

Are you saying that the other 70% -- who aren't heavy/problem drinkers -- aren't constructively involved in music, theater, the arts, athletics, student government, community service, other ecs, etc., etc. (even, believe it or not, academics)? From what I've seen, there are (and always have been) those who drink too much on every college campus around -- as well as those who don't. As with the entire college experience, it's what each individual chooses to make of it... Didn't you make choices?
