Hey so sorry if you guys are tired of seeing these types of posts but I'm trying to make my decisions as a chem major and I had a quick question:
I'm the type of person thats down to party here and there but definitely not on the caliber that UCSB supposedly has. Is it true that you're either an out of control partier or an academics only person? I mean obviously not to that extent of extremes but basically I'm just wondering if its easy to have a balance, and find friends who don't always want to party every weekend? I'm very scared that I won't be able to fit in and will get lost amongst all of the other partiers. Thanks for your help!

I heard as long as you avoid Isla Vista, you should be fine.

Lawlking, there’s no reason you would want to avoid IV. It’s a huge part of going to school at UCSB and you’d be missing out if you weren’t a part of it. I think the party scene is way overblown. Most people at UCSB have a great balance of school and fun. Most people study during the week and go out a day or two during the weekend, nothing too crazy. It’s a different story for most SBCC students though, which there are a lot of in IV. In general, I’d say most SBCC students are living in IV for the partying and don’t have a very good balance, but they are completely different than UCSB students. I think sometimes people see how people from CC are and label UCSB students as the same type of people.

^^I was just replying to what OP was asking. On-campus tends to be quiet, but IV tends to get crazier. If you don’t want to party, avoid the area until you want to party.

Fair enough, but you can definitely have a very well balanced lifestyle in IV, so I wouldn’t avoid it just because of the party reputation.

Are you guys students?

Yes I am

10char

Many of a UCSB student have mastered the art of study hard, party hard.

Yes, its very possible. I can guarantee it.

Nah, don’t be.

No, UCSB students are not out of control partiers or an academics only people. The reason that UCSB is a top ranked university nationally is because people work hard. There is a huge misconception about parties and UCSB. Yes, UCSB has a lot of parties, but what else is going to happen when you put thousands of college students in one place. Either way, whether you want to party or not, it doesn’t matter, it’s your choice. If you don’t want to party ever, you can still have a great social life. If you want to party several times a week, go for it.
I’m a current UCSB student, I have a 3.85 GPA, am a biology major, I party 2 to 3 times a month, and I have a great social life. It’s not like everyone at UCSB parties all the time, and in fact, hardly anyone does that.

yeah party scene is overblown, they are cracking down on it as there is a midnight curfew and cops/ IV patrol walk around and break up parties. There are also other new rules in place like a house hosting underage drinking but don’t know much that is enforced. And yeah lots of CC kids living in IV mainly just to live in IV and party

Im a Chem major. I like to fit in a couple games of beer pong each night, maybe a blunt if my finances permit (& it always does!). I’m graduating this summer. Work hard, play hard. Thats it. You can always study in the libraries 24-hour study room if it’s too loud near your house, or 1 of the hundreds of study room all over IV. Whatever you do, try to avoid heavy lab schedules, & early classes (mostly unavoidable). Good luck
