Party Scenes at these schools:

Hey, i'm looking into applying to these schools, and i know pretty much everything about academics and stuff by now, but can anyone tell me about the party scenes/greek life, what goes on during a typical weekend, etc at any of these? thanks!

George Washington University

Syracuse University

University of Colorado at Boulder

Penn State University Park

University of Maryland College Park

University of Wyoming - i know they have a no tolerance campus, so is there any scene at all?

Virginia Tech

Florida State

UMD’s got a pretty good party and greek scene. GWU and UMD also have the privilege of being in/near DC which has great nightlife especially for the college/recent graduates demographic. There are a few 18+ clubs and once you turn 21 the city’s your oyster.

Isn’t college park a little far from dc though? like 30 miles i thought. it seems to be in the middle of nowhere

/shrug

To most people south of the Mason-Dixon 30 miles is more than reasonable for a night out.

No not 30 miles. It’s like 7 miles from downtown DC. If you get on a Shuttle-UM bus when it arrives and a Metro train shows up when you arrive at the College Park Metro station, that’s only 25-30 minutes of travel in total to get to the U Street neighborhood which is a big nightlife hotspot. At worst it’d take 40-ish minutes if you miss a Shuttle-UM bus (they run every 10 minutes) or Metro train (they can have up to a 10 minute headway depending on time of day). Both the Metro and Shuttle-UM run late on Fridays and Saturdays.

That was really helpful, thanks!

Colorado at Boulder & Penn State party most off that list

No problem. And there’s a fair chance you’ll be living off campus by the time you’re 21. Rent is pricey in DC but if you get some roommates then it’s reasonably affordable. Neighborhoods like Adams Morgan (I’m actually gonna be living there and commuting, my dad’s house is there) have lots of bars and clubs.

Of course, don’t just pick a school based on the nightlife and party scenes. You can always move to somewhere like DC after school ;)

Off of that list:

Colorado is best for drugs and outdoor activities, but the parties are kind of restricted to awkward apartment settings and Boulder PD are surprisingly zealous.

Penn State has a good party scene, but it is really segregated and dependent on Greek since there is no real town there.

Florida State has great weather and located in a decently-sized city (that is boring as hell) but has lots of places to go. Another plus about Florida state is that the acquisition of a Jeep Wrangler will do wonders for your social stature.

virginia tech definitely has a party scene but academics are a priority.
a lot of my friends go there and a bunch of students from my graduating class are entering this month

but it is a great school for academics and parties.

I can’t speak for any of those schools but about the zero tolerance thing, it’s pretty much a joke. My school is supposed to be a dry campus(no alcohol, drugs, etc) but yet I’d say about 95% of people are at least drinking regularly, if not that and drugs.

Wasn’t Penn State voted the number one party school in the nation last year or the year before?

This year, by the Princeton Review… But the Princeton Review party school rankings are pretty horrible. I doubt any serious party goer puts Penn State on their map. It isn’t a special scene, there isn’t a lot to do there. Hell, the Princeton Review had SUNY Albany as a top party school one of these years. It’s a joke.

The best rankings are if you take #1-#5 each year from Playboy’s rankings. They throw some pretty unusual places in the bottom 5, with the exception of places like Iowa.

If I had to rank it, based on rankings I’ve seen and what I’ve heard:

1) Texas
2) ASU
3) West Virginia
4) Wisconsin
5) Florida
6) Alabama
7) Georgia
8) UC Santa Barbara
9) Florida State
10) Arizona
11) USC
12) Iowa
13) Ohio University (legendary pick, but it has fallen recently)
14) Penn State
15) Rollins College

At UMD you get every possible type of night life, whether you smoke or drink, like clubs or bars, frat parties or apartment parties, or even smaller dorm parties.
My friends and I have been high fived by strangers for being ridiculously drunk while it was still light out. We have cheered for people racing down Rt. One in move-out bins. Strangers get smoked and drinked (drunk?) up routinely.
Last year when the Terps beat Duke there was a riot that ended with the mall on fire and the cops beating students.

I haven’t visited a lot of other schools on weekends, but friends tell me that none of this unspoken comraderie occurs at their schools. Also 99% of the student body isn’t usually drunk every night every weekend.

There’s also a good music scene in DC if you’re into that.

My cousin goes to CU-Boulder. Every 4/20 students AND teachers go out to the Norlin Quad and smoke the herb. For hours. Not kidding. Look it up on youtube.

"There’s also a good music scene in DC if you’re into that. "

truth, as well as a lot of major music venues in DC and Maryland which means a lot of major bands.

@ilovecolegge check out UCSC

<a href=“4/20 UC Santa Cruz 2008 - YouTube”>4/20 UC Santa Cruz 2008 - YouTube;

Best quote:
“there’s more smoke than oxygen in this general vicinity right now”

Penn State:

-Tons of bars and clubs downtown.
-Has the largest Greek Life system in the nation
-Drunk bus takes you straight to Frat Row
-A lot of people out late at night singing, doing crazy stuff
-Football games are insane
-a lot of school pride
-55/45 ratio but seems like there’s an unlimited supply of SPs.

So far I’ve been out 4 of 5 nights I’ve been here and still make it to my 8AMs.

Penn State is alot of fun.

I had lots of friends who went there, I had a blast everytime I visited.
