Party School?

Michigan is towards the top of my list and I'm trying to figure out whether it's right for me. My only main question is the partying. I have no problems with having a good time on the weekend and going to parties but during the week I like to focus on academics. While I make exception to this rule, I don't want to be constantly surrounded by noise and parties throughout the week. Will this happen?

There will be parties at any college you go to. There's a danger that you'll be constantly surrounded by noise and parties anywhere--it would all depend on who your neighbors are.

You can always go to the libraries if you find things too noisy.

Has anyone been denied after being deferred yet?

Monday through Thursday people are hardcore about studying...sometimes it's pretty much impossible to find a table at the library. Thursday through Saturday most people party, but a lot of people also spend that time studying. It really depends on your major. Communications, sociology, psychology majors tend to party a lot, while people like myself (pre-med) have to put in a lot more time if they want the A's.

Michigan has parties, but it's not ASU or Chico State. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm only a prospective student but when I visited I got the same impression. Weekdays=super studious, weekends=blow off stress. Most of the students I spoke with made it very clear that Michigan is a very work hard/play hard school. Finding a good study environment shouldn't be difficult.

Michigan is not a party school. During the week, most students study pretty hard. On weekends, many students party, but most just hang out. Of course, most students, even those who party, will tend to study on weekends too.

I agree with the previous comments: Michigan has a good balance of work and play, or at least for myself. Parties are usually on Thursday nights till Saturday nights. But the learnign environment's really conducive.

communications and psych majors probably start partying on wednesday night til like sunday, engineers party on friday night. if u don't like parties, there's ton of other stuff to do, and i don't think that many people really party, it's more just hanging out.

ton of people in the libraries at any given time. Only time there isn't a lot of people in the libraries is friday night and football saturdays, but there are still people there. If you like quiet and studious companionship, goto the engineering library.

If your looking for a university rank similar to University of Michigan- Ann Arbor with a balance of play and study that would be University of Wisconsin- Madison. Concluding, from what I've been inform University of Michigan- Ann Arbor is not major on activities like parties, I've always been inform that the University isn't really fun... reason such as very low party scene I guess. I think you wouldn't have a problem avoiding the party scence at University of Michigan- Ann Arbor though you would at University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Hey, CB, why don't you weigh in on this issue after you've actually gotten selected and attend this school.
The poster was asking a question meant for people who actually attend the school.
You truly do not know what you're talking about in this case, yet you continue to act like you do.
OP, given the rigor, students I know who actually GO to UM attempt to balance work and play so it is likely a good fit for you in that regard since you sound like that's what you want. It is good to think ahead about the dorm environment. You may wish to consider applying for substance free housing where there is a higher likelihood of quiet. The north campus is known to be a little quieter as well.
Hope that helps you.
Also, contrary to CB's misguided opinion, students who are a fit for this school don't seem to be suffering from any lack of fun. That's a direct observation : )
Cheers,
K

Kmccrindle, what are you talking about? I'm giving the OP a discription of answers I've got when I asked similar questions. If I thought the students were suffering from fun I wouldn't have University of Michigan- Ann Arbor my top second choice. Though it's obvious the student body is different than University of Wisconsin- Madison. As I gave a discription before, University of Wisconsin- Madison have always been seen as work hard play hard. I'm just implying these two students body are different. More so if OP wanted to avoid the party scene at University of Michigan- Ann Arbor there should be no problem. Basically, again have myself have been given answers by students who actually attended the university, party scence at University of Michigan- Ann Arbor should be no problem for OP. While many always tell me University of Michigan- Ann Arbor lacks fun, as Kmccrindle pointed out, doesn't mean I think the university lacks fun.

I don't know if I'd put U of M and U of W on the same level academically. I think the degree from U of M carries more weight, especially for certain majors. If I had to compare U of M to another school academically and socially, I would probably compare it to UNC or UVA.

Parties at UMich are pretty good - most weekdays everyone will be studying but i had some days early in the semester when i had nothing to do midweek so i would go out - still happens now but it's near exam time so i stay in more. The Frats have stuff most weekends and stuff will pick up around thursdays (people hitting the bars and house parties)

It's not a party school in comparison to ASU or Western Michigan - yet it isn't like a bunch of nerds with pencil protectors either - it's fun.

But you find your niche - i didnt party at all in HS (4 varsity sports and a recruit - couldnt risk it) - but i have friends here that smoke pot and drink every night and i have some that hit the Law Library every night with me till about 12pm - so you just need to find the right group and you'll do fine.

Michigan is all what you want it to be. It is by no means a “party school” but there are A LOT of parties. I personally go out Thurs-Sat and there are ALWAYS parties going on, just maybe not huge frat parties (which get old with time). However, the party scene during the week is definitely low and I have never been bothered by noise or anything while trying to study during the week. Also, like someone said above, the library is a good place to go if you are trying to study on the weekend.
