How would a non-partying student fit in at Knox?

you'll fit in just fine. there's lots of people who prefer a quieter lifestyle, and Knox Security is very willing to step in if you're having difficulties with partying neighbors. Also, Kegs are not allowed on campus, so you don't have to worry about crazy Kegger parties :)

is knox a dry campus?

also - how big is the greek system at knox? how easy would it be to not be in it? how much is the socializing grounded in the greek life?

finally,

how far is downtown galesburg from the dorms on campus? a walk? do you need a car?

can someone describe galesburg?

Knox is not a dry campus but there are lots of students who are not interested in drinking. The Greek life will be where a lot of the partying is centralized but being Greek is not at all a big part of the campus. I went to Knox and was not Greek, never went to a party at a Greek house even! I want to say that it's about 30% of the men and 12% of the women who are Greek. It's kind of seen as another club/org, not an exclusive environment.

Knox is in downtown Galesburg. You can walk across the street and be at the county courthouse. The train station (Amtrak) is about three blocks from campus. About 4 blocks is shopping, restaurants, etc. You definitely do not need a car.

Galesburg is a small city but unusually diverse--maybe because of Knox being here. It's your typical midwestern city with a lot of agriculture but also has an amazing symphony, antique mall, 80+ restaurants, just lots of stuff. I loved going to school in Galesburg. I didn't have the distractions of a big city but wasn't in an infinitely small town where it was hard to find things to do. I think there's about 5 coffeeshops within walking distance of campus.

thanks sgawor. So that I can a an extra bit of 'longitudinal data', do you mind sharing what you are doing post Knox? you can pm me if you want.

I noticed in another post the high percentage of students who recvd a PhD who were from Knox - they are in the same picture as Swatties and the other ultra selective schools - impressive.

the general question here as a wrap up w/ the others is:

how would characterize the intellectual environment at Knox? Students seem pretty serious and intent on studies? How much does talking about subjects presented in class continue outside of class ..for the hey and the liking of it?

Knox was recommended by an individual on cc for my son, a definite non partier, sounds alot like what joecollegedad is looking for. I'm pretty excited, thinking there is FINALLY a college where my son will fit in. The drinking and frats worried me also, but it appears to be another side to campus life.

Any more comments would be appreciated!!

Agree w/kimfred. If anyone has any insight regarding joecollegedad’s last post, that would be really helpful! I’d like to hear about the intellectual environment.

Any specific questions? I’m a current knox student and would be happy to answer any questions regarding the environment there.

Also, I feel like I’m in a unique position to talk about knox vis a vis other schools-This is my third school.

I’m not going to lie, the greek life is a part of knox, as it is a part of most schools. The difference, I feel, is the way that it is used at knox. As was said above, the greek system at knox does not feel as exclusive as other schools. Being a Greek doesn’t proclude you from having friends that aren’t greeks, and friends in other fraternities even. Furthermore, you don’t have to go greek yourself to fit in with those crowds. Some of my better friends at school went greek, and I don’t see any marked difference between them and my friends who do not belong to a frat.

As to drinking, as with any school, if a student wants to drink, they are going to find a place to do it. The party scene at knox is real, and extensive, yet I have never felt any pressure to drink when I didn’t want to. People are understanding of other lifestyles than theirs-Actually, one of the key things about knox is the level of tolerance that we all have for each other. When the school says a student “is knox” it means they are part of this community. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay straight black white drinker or non drinker. You will be able to find understanding.

As to the intellectual community, like I said, this is my third school, and I can safely say that I am overwhelmed at the quality of the professors here. I have only had 9 classes here, and already I have had 3 of the best professors of my life. This is a community very dedicated towards knowledge and learning, and the school shows that, with the trimester schedule allowing students to more solidly focus on a subject, and with the professor to student ratio that assures that your professors will all know you by name and will care about your individual learning needs.

Coming to knox was the best decision that I ever made.
