Partying, Sexual Offenses, etc

I recently heard

a. Duke is a notorious party school
b. Duke's rape rate is 1 in 10

Are these absurd or plausably true? Thank you!

college crime reporting and the data from such is public knowledge.

I can't wait to go to DUKE!

http://ope.ed.gov/security/Search.asp

Duke is only a party school compared to the typical elite college. It's about on the level of places like Penn and Princeton.

There were only eight reported sexual offenses in 2004.

Thanks- thats reassuring. But tell me more about the partying- how does it compare to other schools- ie ivies, stanford, etc?

From what I hear, most of the partying is done right after a big win by the basketball team. As for the statistics on rape, I really don't know.

It pays to be optimistic.

It is a great school, though.

1 in 4 women will be raped in their lifetime. 1 in 6 college women will be the victims of rape during their college years. The average age of a rape victim is 18, 90% of victims do not report the incident to the police, up to 50% don't tell anyone about the assault, and the most vulnerable time for victims is the first 6 weeks during the first semester of college.

Yes, it's dismal. Yes, it's terrible. Unfortunately, rape happens everywhere, guys. It is not limited to Duke or "party schools," and you would be very, very, very, sadly mistaken to assume that it is not prevalent at Yale, Harvard, Brown, Princeton, or any other "good" school. I'm a peer educator at Duke, and unfortunately those are the statistics that we have to memorize for our presentations. Notice how none of those mention Duke; they are nation-wide statistics.

Rape is a terrible thing, and nothing that any woman (or man) should have to go through. It is important to always be careful and watch out for your safety; always travel in groups, do not go out alone at night, pour your own drink, stay with a group of friends. But please do not make the mistake of assuming that rape is limited to, or more prevalent on, certain campuses - because that would be a huge injustice to Duke (and other schools), and would only bias your college decision in a very sad way. Duke is an amazing school...unfortunately, rape and sexual assault do happen. But please do not make the mistake of thinking that it doesn't happen on every single college campus in this country. You just have to be careful.

About equal to: Princeton, Penn, Stanford, Dartmouth

More of a party school than: Harvard, Yale, MIT, Cornell

I don't know much about partying at Brown or Columbia so I can't say anything about how Duke rates there.

Oh, about the party school part -

I don't know. Dukies definitely know how to party. There are usually quite a few frat parties on weekends, and K-Ville on a Friday night basically just consists of mud, tents, and beer. However...I know QUITE a few people who don't drink or "party" (not just in the sub-free dorm, in every dorm on campus). Also, I define a "party school" as a place where people tend to party every night of the week (I definitely have friends at this type of school - they are pretty much in a constant state of drunk 24/7). However, not only is this not the case at Duke (yes, there will always be SOME people drinking if you want to find them), but I don't think that at a "party school" you would still find people studying in the library on a Friday night (which you definitely do).

It's definitely more "party" than some other schools, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a party school. In fact, most people I know at Duke crack up when they hear our school referred to that way. Honestly, even though we know how to let loose on the weekends, we work too damn hard during the week to earn the "party school" name...

I already completed my AP Partying requirements. Are any of the libraries open 24-7?

-kidding guys

Lol, at Brown they have naked drunken festivals.
I am going to say Brown>Duke on the party scale.

You haven't heard of Sigma Nude?

EDIT: I don't think you go here, of course you wouldn't...

oooh, naked drunken festivals, you say? Maybe I should apply there...

when i was deciding between duke and brown i felt that brown had a weaker party scene.

duke has a vibrant social life... in comparison to its peer institutions. i mean- we're no big 10 state school with insane amounts of debauchery on a daily basis. but we do have better social lives and way more fun than any other school in the usnews top 10. i enjoy myself. it's not out of control by any means (unless you want it to be).

as for rape. rape happens everywhere. 1 in 10 reported cases. to be pessimistic-- not every case of rape gets reported. that's an unfortunate case. bandcampgirl presented the sobering and depressing statistics of rape. it happens. just because it happens and statitistics prove that doesn't mean that there are rapists lurking around duke in the bushes trying to molest innocent girls. it's usually not like that. in college, most incidents of rape are by someone you know -- at a party, when you're drunk, etc. watch your cup, be aware of your surroundings. the rape statistics at duke will be the same statistics as they will be at any comparable institution.

No, I would say that Brown has a much bigger party scene. All those liberals (not being offensive, I am one) do is party. Brown is notorious for allowing its students easy access to alcohol.

Alcohol isn't exactly hard to find here, or on most college campuses.

"1 in 4 women will be raped in their lifetime."

For some reason I don't believe this bandcampgirl. Statistics are misleading. When you say 1 in 4 women get raped in their lifetime are you taking specifically United States or the world? I wouldn't be as suprised if its in the world as many women get raped in Middle Eastern/African countries. In America, I would believe this number to be significantly lower.

The sad thing is...

In a study of 6,000 students at 32 colleges in the US, 42% of rape victims told no-one and only 5% reported it to the police. (Warshaw 1994)

Hopeful, I don't mean to insinuate anything - but are you a man or a woman? If you are a woman, then I'm so very happy that you and your friends have been fortunate enough to have trouble believing a statistic like that - and that is not in the least sarcastic. I really am happy for you, because it's definitely nothing I want people to easily believe. But if you are a man, please consider that that may be the reason why you have a problem believing that statistic to be true, and I do not.
