Pass / Fail Class For GE

When is the most appropriate time to sign up for a pass or fail class? I kinda wanna just complete 1 ge class without worrying much about it. Pros and Cons. Getting a A would raise gpa. Con, nothing is 100%. Pro of choosing pass or fail grading, Dont worry about the class, just do work and get the pass. Con. Zero gpa influence.

Never do pass/fail for GE classes ever or even your major pre-reqs, the UC’s will not accept those. You only do pass/fail on classes that are irrelevant to everything what your trying to do.

Meaning all classes required for your major must be taken for a letter grade. That means pre reqs and actual major classes. Also all GE classes that fulfill specific GE requirements must be taken for a grade. But you will have many other “elective” classes you will have to take to get to the 180 units needed to graduate. I plan to take some interesting, but challenging classes outside of my major but I don’y want to stress about the workload or trying to get an A so for this pass/no pass makes sense.

The citation that backs what you guys are saying. Where did you get your information?

To be considered for UC admission as a junior, you must fulfill both of the following:

Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college credit with a GPA of at least 2.4 (2.8 if you’re a nonresident). No more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units may be taken Pass/Not Pass.

Where you have to be careful is when completing pre-reqs or classes toward your major. It would be very very very rare, for your major department at the UC you’re transferring to, to accept pre-reqs that were completed P/NP. You also need to look into IGETC and/or TAG agreements and see if there are any stipulations on completing classes P/NP. If none of the above apply to the GE class you are taking then I see no reason why the UC’s wouldn’t accept up to 14 semester/21 quarter units of them.

Thanks for the citation. That is what I had thought it was.

I took a pre-req P/NP because my major allows one class to be taken that way. As long as your department allows it, I don’t see why other people should be prevented from taking some classes P/NP.

if your planning to go to a grad school after transfer, I wouldn’t recommend it because they even look at W’s for a unnecessary class harsh and wait till they say about P/NP. If grad school is not your future then you don’t have to worry about it. Yes they look at your CC transcript and UC transcript (if you transfered)
