Pass Fail Classes

How do Law Schools treat classes graded Pass/Fail? If you could have a 4.0 by having 2-3 Pass grades instead of B or B+ should you go with the Pass or will they assume a grade lower than B?

If you don't rack up many of them, they won't care. On the other hand, they won't care about two B's, either.

You should go with the Pass instead of 2-3 B or B+, which would pull your GPA down to about 3.90 to 3.97 (assuming 120 units to graduate, 3-4 units per class). The difference should be minimal for all schools except HYS, which have 75th percentile GPAs above 3.95.

Can that possibly be correct analysis? I'll do some math and look some stuff up and think about it some.

i'm kind of worried about this, i go to brown and have taken about 1 class pass fail a semester which it seems most students seem to do. i have a 4.0 at this point but don' t know whether the pass/fails will hurt me. i asked one of the deans and he said 1 p/f a semester should be fine since its a normal habit at the school but i still have my doubts.

--It is much more normal at Brown.
--Still, it might be nice if you wanted to cut back a little. How far into Brown are you?

Peace Freak, chill. There are plenty of Brownies at YHS and some of them took some classes S/NC.

Re: post #3: It seems ridiculous to me, but I can't see the flaw in the argument. The math is about right and the 75th percentiles really are above 3.95. Other thoughts?

You have to remember that some colleges give A+s, which factor in as 4.33. A few years back, more than 12% of an incoming Harvard Law class had gpa's above 4.0. That doesn't mean they had straight As.

There used to be a poster on another site that had a 4.0 at Stanford undergrad. He did however have a B minus and a couple of other non-A grades.

That's one reason why when people try to compare the median gpa of students admitted from Harvard or Yale undergrad to their law schools with the overall gpa and argue they get a big boost they are overstating their cases a bit. H and Y undergrad don't give A+s.

I can assure you I know people with B-grades who got into YHS law.

i'm going into junior year, so i have 4 p/f's as of now

Yup. If you wanted to stop now, that would be plenty early. On the other hand, I know it's much more common at Brown and would probably be understood.

thanks for the input mike, mucho appreciated
