Hi,

Over the summer I will be taking an ALgebra 2 and Chemistry course in order to get ahead in school. If I take these courses over the summer, than these courses will be considered pass/fail courses. My counselor said that Ivy League schools and MIT would have a problem with this. Those are the schools I want to go to. My class rank i low (49 of 566) so I want to be ahead. PLEASE HELP??

Thanks

I’d recommend emailing the colleges and asking them. You could always explain why they’re pass/fail in the Additional Information section of the Common App, or you could have your counselor explain it in their recommendation.

First, how much will this actually allow you to get ahead? What courses will you be able to take by the end of your senior year that you wouldn’t have been able to take without doing these summer classes? If these classes are pass/fail, presumably they won’t be factored into your GPA or class rank.

Would it be possible to get some kind of grade report that lists a letter grade even if it’s listed as pass/fail on your transcript? You could send that along with your applications.

Are there any other ways you could get the credit and still get a letter grade? Would your school allow you to get credit by taking a final exam without taking the class (and your grade on the test would be your grade in the class)?

Thanks. This class will put me about two years ahead of everyone else. I will email the colleges and I will get a grade report at the end of the class. The final for Chemistry wouldn’t work our as it is a lab based class but it may work for Algebra 2.
