I'm doing undergrad right now...

I'm thinking of taking a class which I don't want it to affect my GPA.. is it true that if you take it Pass/Fail and you Pass it Grad schools will count it as if you got a 2.0 GPA in that class?

TIA

If you only take one or two classes as P/F your entire undergraduate career, grad schools will probably not think much about them at all. However, if you have a lot of them then maybe grad schools will start to view them as Cs. It's the same with W's. If you have one or two, no one thinks very much about them because there are any number of factors that could have caused you to get the W. However, if you have a lot of them it looks like a pattern and then they start to look like Ds and Fs.

thanks for your prompt response...

So what are valid reasons for taking a course on a Pass/Fail Basis ?

I would say it really depends. Talk to an adviser at your school to see what is normal. IMO, it's best to take a normal load of classes all for normal grades, then tack on a class P/F that interests you. Generally I think a P/F class should be one you wouldn't normally take that's way out of your comfort zone.

never do p/f, thats my opinion

p/f is something you do if its a class that is something you are interested in.... say a foreign language and you are an engineering major. Say you were very interested in the class and took it soley for yourself. If the rest of your grades are good and you can show a reason you took it (traveling or study abroad for instance) this may be seen as a bonus to your application. If you took a class such as Organic Chemistry and you are a chem major.. obviously that wouldn't pass over as well (but i'm pretty sure you can't take a p/f as a major course.. but it was an example)

I'm a Finance major and need to fulfill a Lib Ed requirement. I really don't find anything that fits my schedule that would fulfill that requirement, so I'm going for a class of the influence of greece in the world... and would like to take it pass/fail so it doesn't affect my gpa...

^^^ doesn't sound like a very good reason... just take the class, it sounds like a gpa booster.
