So at my school in NC, we don't need an art class to graduate. However, in selection of courses for senior year, my guidance counselor told me that in order to attend a school out-of-state, we need an art credit.

So I decided upon a Music Appreciation online course over the summer that is a standard 4.0, in order to have that credit.

I'm not sure whether I should take it pass-fail, or at all even. I just want to keep my options open for colleges out-of-state. At this point, what's the best thing for me to do? I'm really looking for help. Thanks!

“in order to attend a school out-of-state, we need an art credit”

I’ve not heard of this requirement. Certainly none of the schools my kids looked at required it. Does anyone else know of schools that require ‘an art credit?’ This seems like a waste of time and money given what else the OP could be doing over the summer.

OP, ask your gc what schools he/she is referring to.

The UCs require an art credit.

Okay, thanks. Are there any others?

I’d like to know, because if so, I may just cancel my summer course if possible.

I’m going to summer camp for 5 weeks, so I needed an art class that wouldn’t carry a heavy load… since I haven’t taken an online class ever before.

All the public CA universities require 1 HS year of art/music, or 1 semester of community college credit - the UC’s, Cal States, and Cal Polys

OP, go back to your GC and ask which school require it. Please post if you get an answer from him/her besides the UCs. None of the top liberal arts colleges, private universities nor our in-state had this requirement, at least that I’m aware of.

You can look on each school’s common data set to see what is required and what is suggested.
The GC’s at my son’s school keep telling everyone it is “required” for college bound students. I finally asked if they would give him his diploma without it, and they said yes. So it’s not “required” I said. Apparently it is suggested at our two major state universities to which nearly all students from this school apply. My son has no interest in either school.
I told the GC we’d take our chances without it.

I actually might just drop the art class. At this point, it’s going to be a 4.0, and would bring down my GPA. I feel like I would be far better suited closer to where I live, even though I am interested a bit in UCLA and UC Berkeley.

But I also heard the University of South Carolina requires 1 art credit… would I be able to apply to those colleges, then choose to take an art second semester senior year in order to meet the requirement?

My priorities right now are Duke, UChicago, and UNC Chapel Hill… all of which do not require the art credit. Would it be better to keep the GPA, class rank and such up and choose not to take the art class?
