Do you guys think taking classes pass/fail is going to adversely affect admission chances? I have to get 150 to be able to be eligible for the CPA exam and taking classes pass/fail will be very convenient.

Well, I've been advised to definitely avoid taking classes pass/fail.

Hey, do you think this is true even if it is a ridiculously hard class like Arabic?

I've considered taking a few classes pass/fail, I have a list of about 3 classes (Law and Economics, Formal Logic and Intro to Marketing) that I want to take just for my personal benefit, but I know I'd do terrible in them, or at least bring down my GPA slightly.

I'm going to take them next year as a 6th (24 credit hours) or even 7th class (28 credit hours), so it wouldn't be looked at as slacking.

One or two pass/fail classes won't kill you if you have a demanding and diverse transcript. That's especially true if you take the classes freshman or sophomore year.

What if the pass/fail are in classes that are totally irrelevant to my major? For example, taking music classes pass/fail (im a acct/finance major btw) just to get the credits for the 150. Do you guys think adcoms would care?

i think they should be significantly different from your major courses, and that there should be few of them. i talked to a uchicago rep and she said that she doesn't like to see them. from her i gathered that 2-3 total is probably as high as one should go. also, a harvard admissions counselor said (without even responding to a question) that pass/fails on the transcript are a concern.

also, what if the pass/fail courses are in 1 or 2 unit courses that dont allow you to take the class for a letter grade? should people stay away from those classes?

Yeah, GoldenBear that's a good question... I'm in a class like that, and I have to take it to keep my scholarship...

If you can't take the class for a letter grade, then they're definitely not going to be upset. Overall, I doubt anyone will care very much unless they notice that you've taken a ton of P/F courses.

Yeah, I agree with American - you can't agonize over every single instance of pass/fail...as long as you take pass/fail where it makes sense to versus where it makes your life most easy then your going to be fine....I took Research and Thesis my senior year...both MAT 4XX level, but both pass/fail....I'm not worried about it in the least...its standard for those courses to be pass/fail...and it's not like they were a subsitute for the #X amount of upper division actual classes I had to take for a grade....

I think everyone here has good enough judgement to know what's excessive, and as long as you avoid crossing that line I think its ok
