Hi,

I just currently have a dilemma regarding choosing p/np option for a class in my major (Psychology). I did poorly on the first midterm because I misread an essay question, which resulted in a significant point decrease. Given the score on the first midterm, even if I do very well on all subsequent exams, it is still highly likely that I will end up with a B or B+ (if I do extremely well, I might get to an A-). However, another midterm is after p/np deadline, so it is a big risk.
The thing is that this is the first class I actually took in Psychology and I am afraid how p/np would look on my transcript (I assume that in future psych classes I shouldn't have any problem).
Also, since I am not double-majoring, taking it p/np and not being able to get it count for psych requirements won't result in any much increased workload for me in the future.
My possible future plan is to apply either for grad school or law school, which is why I am a bit GPA-conscious...
What do you think, should I just p/np it (I would be left with 12 letter graded units afterwards)?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Wait, is the class a required prereq for your major? Because if it is, I thought major prereqs HAD to be taken for a letter grade, and you could get no lower than a C?

wait what class is this first of all?

Oh, is it? What I thought was that yes, you need to satisfy all your major requirements with courses taken for a letter grade; however, there should be nothing to prevent you from taking an extra class in your major pass/no pass as long as you don’t apply it towards satisfying the requirements. Could please someone correct me if I am wrong? Otherwise, the class is psych C127.

Yes, that’s right… you can just take this class p/np, and take another class in future semesters to fulfill that requirement. It’s perfectly fine taking psych classes p/np if you have other classes you’re taking for letter grade.

Not meaning to hijack, but I have a similar question. Sorry if I am!

Can I p/np my CS61A class? I am not sure if I want to do CS or not, but I do not want that grade to affect my GPA if I do decide not to continue CS.

Thanks!

what happens if you P/NP a major core requirement ? you can easily do it through telebears.

do they just drop you out of the major at the end of the semester?
do they just have the teacher tell the dept what grade you would’ve gotten and apply that grade to your transcript even if you elected to take it p/np?
