I have a question regarding Pass/No pass grades for major requirements.

I intend to major in MCB (I am a sophomore).

My first semester I took Chem 1A as Pass/No pass and decided not to pass it on purpose so that I would be able to retake it the next semester for a letter grade and receive credit.
The second time around, I got an A in Chem 1A, so does that count towards my major?
I changed the grading the first time because I did not want an F or a D on my transcript.
Does it matter that I took the class as P/NP?
Have I redeemed myself not that I retook the course?

I have a friend who goes to UCB who took a prereq as a P/NP course just because he didn’t want to risk a grade lower than an A. It really doesn’t matter because it’s a prereq, not an important upper div course.

Yeah, that is the same question I have.
I am interested in MCB and I do not not want my bad decision to set me back.
I took the class for a letter grade the second time around and got an A.

Is it possible to take a class P/NP, pass it, and still be able to retake for a letter grade because you need it to declare for the major?? or no

Can anyone please answer this question? Cos im stuck in a similar situation!!
Can I take a major prereq for pass/no pass, pass it, and then take the same class(or another in the same sequence) to fulfill a major prereq. (This is all BEFORE declaring a major.)
And if you can, do you get credit for it?
