English requirements grades are taken very seriously. Anything above a B is fine, but there are a number of top UCs that are upfront about the fact that they aren’t even fond of B minuses in R&C courses. Even if you can satisfy the requirement with a p/np class, I would not recommend it.
Choose your professor wisely and you will be fine. Critical thinking courses can actually be very fun as the essays tend to be argumentative rather than analyzing a required reading to death or obsessive over grammatical rules.
@goldencub And that’s the reason why I chose Critical Thinking over another composition course. However, when I looked over the syllabus it seemed really tough. I’m pretty sure I’ll learn critical thinking skills without the pressure of getting an A.
I have until June 24th to decide whether I should file for P/NP…
Thank you for your reply
I’m also applying for UCLA but as an EE major. On my assist report English is listed, so I need to take it for a letter grade. Your situation might be different, but I would take it for a letter grade just in case.
I believe English (and the math) must be taken for a letter grade. Anyway, under any conditions, I would urge you not to go the P/NP route with English.
