as a science major i was wondering if its ok to take foreign language classes as pass/no pass (like French 1 or Japanese 1 or something)

i took the spanish placement exam at orientation and got placed into spanish 6...so although my foreign language reqs are gone, i still wanna take a couple of the classes, up to say....3rd level or 4th level

i dont hav plans for a minor in the language or anything...just wondering will taking these classes as pass/no pass affect my chances of admission to post-undergrad schools? will it look good since im not earning letter grades for them and only taking them for fun?

a lot of counselors and advisors recommend that you don't take pass/no pass classes for various reasons. I don't understand why you'd want to take it anyways. I know for law school, a pass will represent a C while a no pass is a F when adding up your total GPA. I don't think it looks good at all anyways b/c a C could represent anything from an A-C and more than likely, someone will think a C.

I'm taking a Fiat Lux Seminar class, which is P/NP. I intend to go to law school so should I not take the seminar class anymore since the law schools will calculate it as a "C"?

I think I know where qwerty is coming from. Why take classes that have no "use" for the future? Uh...to broaden my horizons? To expand my mind? To stimulate intellectual thought? To satisfy curiousity? To develop me as a human being in a multiethnic world?

The University of California at Berkeley Career Center answers the question, "Should I take courses Pass/Fail?" Their answer is: "Although you may take some courses Pass/Fail, you should realize that the Law School Data Assembly Service counts a 'Fail' as an 'F' and calculates it into your GPA as a zero. The 'Pass' is given no value and is not factored into the GPA. Therefore, if you are considering applying to law school, be selective when using the Pass/Fail grading option. Whenever possible, choose courses that engage your interests and take them for letter grades."

darkling,
where im coming from is that i dont want the language classes to end up hurting my GPA. i am deeply interested in learning a 6th language (either french or japanese), but dont know if i can put in the time and requirements as a science major. i mean its only 3 or 4 quarters of a LANGUAGE class. in the grand scheme of 180+ units, shouldnt 10 units NOT make that much of a difference? i mean, it wouldnt even affect my core major classes or app to professional schools, right?

another option: take it at a CC or 4 yr college during summer. CC may not have the language offered during summer while a CSU might be a bit expensive. this way u would not have to send in the transcript AND u could get ur 6th language done. just curious, if u are influent in all 5 languages dont u think thats good enough?
