Current Fall 2011 applicant. I'm currently taking a psychology course to satisfy this:

"2. Complete the following course pattern requirements, earning a grade of C or better in each course:
Four transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) chosen from at least two of the following subject areas:

arts and humanities
social and behavioral sciences
physical and biological sciences"

I'm an engineering major and I have plenty of courses in Physical and Biological Sciences but I don't have anything in the other two categories which is why I'm taking the Psych course. I know it says "C or better" but I'm wondering if I could still take it P/NP. Theres a possibility I will be going to Grad school later on, so I'm just trying to save my GPA.

I am not sure how pass/no pass works with general ed but I would also like to know. Are you transferring from a CC? If you are, you don’t need to worry about your GPA before you transfer when considering grad school, you’re going to have a whole new GPA once you transfer. Good luck!

At most schools P/NP is defined as a C or better. If this is the case at your school than taking it P/NP will not be a problem. I have taken several IGETC/unit only classes as P/NP.

@IndieRockNRoll While transfer students start fresh at their new college, I’m pretty sure grad schools get to see community college grades as well.

Yeah Briceies is correct. Grad schools look at every school you have attended (although, of course they focus more on the upper division GPA). I also want to keep my GPA high for internships/jobs.

Thanks Ella89 for your input. You’re right that its acceptable for IGETC. My college’s catalog states that its okay for CSU GE but didn’t mention about UCs. I’m pretty sure its fine for “bulk” classes that are used just to reach 60 units, but I’m taking this course specifically for the UC General Breadth requirement I quoted in my original post.

Any other input? Hopefully I can get in contact with some UCs during the school week.

I have taken several igetc courses p/np. I wouldn’t worry about it. You’re an engineering major so if you have a high gpa, taking a social science p/np will not deem you as incompetent. It’s social science majors taking math p/np I’d worry about.
