I've emailed a few admissions officers with questions, and they responded with very helpful answers. Is it a good idea to send back a quick "thank you," or will that seem superfluous? I don't want to come off as rude, but I also don't want them to see my thank you and get annoyed by all the correspondence. These are small LACs, if that changes anything.

I would send back a brief thank you message. It’s the polite thing to do and they probably won’t be annoyed by that. Also, you never know, they could just be the ones reading our application.

Being polite is never overkill.

All right, thanks – just wanted to check :)
