Pass on UR

I was thrilled to gain admittance to the University of Richmond a few years ago. My elation quickly subsided. Descending through the forest on the switchbacks from Three Chopt, marked my descent into a pit of unhappiness, despair, and not to mention inevitable financial ruin.

Richmond is a beautiful school. On first visit, it seems so quaint and perfect. Tucked away amongst soaring pines and a tranquil lake, the place seems like a small heaven on earth. The school feels academically challenging. Students are everywhere and they appear to be busy. However, I quickly realized that just like the freshly replanted flowers it is all a fa

Please identify the "large, state university" you transferred to, which in your opinion provides "a much better academic environment" than the University of Richmond.

Thank you.

URdefect, you have already had a huge thread on here in which you voiced your dissatisfaction with UR, only to have plenty of other voices dissent. If you have anything legitimate to add, please do, but stop trying to deter people from this school based on entirely subjective qualities from years ago.

I am attempting only to provide a fair warning to prospective students. I feel like you should be VERY CAREFUL when making this decision.

As a high school senior, I genuinely BELIEVED I was being careful and was making the appropriate choice. However, this was not the case at all. I was led to believe that Richmond was this great and wonderful place. Given the nature of the school, the campus environment, the students that end up matriculating there, etc. I feel that my subjective opinions about Richmond are highly relevant when evaluating quality of life at college. My opinions are especially valuable because I have had the experience of attending two excellent universities and can, from a students' view, compare.

The short and dirty of it is this. Richmond DENIES students the kinds of opportunities that make college an exciting time of continued learning. These disadvantages are latent and hard to find if you are buying hook, line, and sinker everything from the Admissions Office and current students. These parties have a highly vested interest in only portraying the one-sided "bright side" of Richmond. I am here to speak to the dark underbelly of the school.

All of my comments are legitimate. While subjective, they are less biased than the 'sales pitch' you may be receiving from elsewhere. I'm only here to warn people against making a horrible mistake.

defect :

Please answer the question which you have avoided:

Please identify the "large, state university" you transferred to, which in your opinion provides "a much better academic environment" than the University of Richmond.

Thank you.

p.s. Your refusal to identify the school you transferred to erodes your credibility.

And as he was passing thru the UR gates enroute to his next stop, his words could be heard at the frat house ... "7 years of college, down the drain!"

Defect ended up at UGA.

Defect has already started a thread on this and I believe most stated that (s)he should have done their due dilligence and end the end they wouldn't have been happy at any smaller LAC and that a larger public was a better fit for them. There's no point to wasting energy on this thread any longer.

Hi Defect--

I am genuinely sorry you had a bad experience at Richmond. I've never responded to your posts because every individual is entitled to report from their point of view.

If you would like to be of legitimate help to the University, I would be happy to hear from you regarding the details of all your complaints. My guess is that when you left, you didn't tell anyone much about why you chose to leave. Leaving that way doesn't help us to improve upon any of the issues that left you so frustrated.

I am Richmond graduate and I have no regrets about having come here, gotten a wonderful education here and stayed here to make my career in admissions. I do NOT feel that I get paid to say good things about the University if they are not authentic. I feel that I try to help students make a good choice about where to further their education and in many cases, I help them identify places that I think will suit them better.

Based on previous threads, I know that it has been quite a long time since you were at UR. It makes me sad that your bitterness has not diminished since then or been replaced with passion for a cause other than telling the world how much you disliked it here. There are lots of productive causes out there that need passionate voices.

once again, richmond rules, dont know who defect hung out with, but between club sports tournaments everywhere from vegas to georgia, and self motivated vounteering, i get of campus a lot. my friends are all involved with more things than i ever expected. ussually everyone here has hidden talents, just learned that a guy on my ultimate team played in a jazz trio and a plays the tuba, go figure. so many cool kids if you know where to look, and even if you dont, the campus is small enough that you will run into many anyway. ur rules, friendly staff, small classes, legit dining hall (as d halls go), and lots and lots and lots of ways to get involved. hell i DONT have enough time to do all the clubs i wanna join, but o well, that just gives credit to UR and the diversity. yes there are a lot of white, middle/upperclass kids here and yes a lot of people dress preppy, but wearing goodwill pants and save darfur shirts is accepted to, i did today. great campus, strong academics, and unlike what defect thinks, the majority of he people like it here. i only know one transfer, and she wishes she could come back, actually she was here last weekend. im not in a frat, and have plenty of friends, and many of them are in frats, it doesnt change a thing. nobody lives in the lodges so we all chill together. god, people really are great here, legit nice people for the most part, id list off all te random acts of kindness but it would take to long. heres one, 1 am i was throwing a frisbee around with some friends during a pick up game, lost one of the discs, random guy comes over and helps up search for ten minutes. nice people. there are jerks and 'mean girls' everywhere, no getting around it, but there are A LOT of good people here, if you want proof just come visit and say hi to random people and ask what they love and hate about the university, i did when i was visiting, nobody said anything bad, oh and everyone was always smiling when i visited, semi creepy cause i was skeptical, but it turns out that life is just good here. want more proof, ANY prospect coming to UR that wants to talk to someone just email me at matt.castelli@richmond.edu before you come, and ill definitly answer whatever questions you have, introduce you to some great people, and you'll be able to decide for yourself if defect is creible or not

peace
