"pass" versus a C

How does a "pass" look like to college admissions?

Will they automatically view it as a D?

Good/Bad?

If they viewd a C as a D, then there would be no point in separating the two letter grades.

C means average. That's how the college will view your grade. Average.

But if I request for a "pass," it would have no affect on my cumulative GPA.

Yes, you're right. But what I am saying is that colleges know that. They probably know that that the "pass" is equivalent to a C. It's not unheard of during the admission process that they re-do your GPA according to their standards.

Oh... so should I just keep the C?

Depends on what you want. But since your GPA is also a very tiny factor in admission....just do what you want. I'm just saying that either way, won't make much of a difference. A C's a C. Nothing bad or anything.

Thanks Tami.

Any other insights?

in college admission GPA is def not a tiny factor

Yeah... i heard that too starryeyedgirl, which is why I'm hesitant to keep the C and not a "pass."

def. not a HUGE factor either.

Class rank is, however. I'd take the pass.

Colleges would rather see a real letter grade than a "pass." They don't look highly on that.

How do they look at classes dropped at the end of a semester? For example, going into a regular class opposed to staying in the AP/Honors class before even though the grade was astonishingly low?

I am not sure but I think that if you had a good a grade and dropped it wouldn't stand out as much. But if you did have a less than decent grade then it would show that you know when you are in over your head.

Yeah, I would think, they would see you dropping it and realising you knew you were way overboard and took the initiative to do something about it.

I suppose that depends on the college though. Idoubt the ivies or top schools will look at you very happily. bunch of grumps at the admissions office (j/k).

Would it do any good to stay in?

bump bump bump

Well, I mean, if you were getting good grades and you dropped it, bad. But if you're getting terrible grades and there is absolutely nothing you can do (tutoring, teacher help, etc.) then I guess it would be better to just drop it.

Do the math on your GPA and see how it would affect it. I have friends that thought getting a C in one class would kill them, when in fact, put together with all their other grades and such, it didn't do anything to, except maybe .02 of a point.

Will a C on a transcript hurt me a lot if I apply to some of the top 25?

I'll probably regret asking this question later, but do I even have a chance anymore?

*note: standardized tests are not my strong suit, therefore I'm not relying so much on that.
