Passage-Based Reading Help!! Soon!

I have just taken the December 2011 SAT and I missed 8 questions on the passage based reading. I have seen that many of you CCers have received 800s on the CR sections and I was wondering if anyone can give me tips on this section. I am taking my next SAT pretty soon so if anybody can give me some advice as soon as possible that would be great!

1) Skip passage

2) Look at the questions, get an idea of them

3) Find specific line references (i.e. he mentions on line 4-5), and underline/circle those lines/words

4) Actually read

5) At the end of each paragraph, find your underlined portions and answer those respective questions

6) Think straight and look for clear evidence; don’t get caught with a Burundi’s ass question!

Concentrate. That’s the key. Even if the passage is about lines and dots, pretend the passage is interesting. I often find it hard to concentrate for the whole passage, so I break the passage into paragraphs - answer one paragraph and answer corresponding questions, then move on to next paragraph. This is particularly helpful because sometimes the questions give you answers that are true, but not yet stated or implied at line x. You must answer the question based on the paragraph or surrounding area that is specified. It also helps to read Newsweek and Time magazine. And remember, if the answer is not supported by the passage, don’t pick it! Never answer a question because YOU think it is true - ask yourself, “Does the author think it’s true?” Good luck!

Thank you so much!

Here’s my best tip: If the line reference is only a single word or phrase (such as #15 on pg 405 of the blue book), then go back to the passage and re-read from the sentence before to the sentence after the line reference.

If the line reference is for a complete sentence or more (such as #22 on page 405 of the blue book), read JUST the line reference to find the answer.

Good luck!
