Hello everyone, incoming freshman to UCLA in the Fall. I passed the AP Calc AB exam with a 5, which according to the site, allows me to place into 31B. However, my orientation is this Sunday, and according to the class planner, 31B is now completely full. Being a math major, I really want to take math this quarter and not just GEs. So would be to my advantage to take 31A even though I passed the AP test, or should I just attempt 32AH with only Calculus AB knowledge? Any feedback would be great. Thanks for your time.

You can still take math31b, it’s a reserved class for freshman at orientation.

As far as I know, you can’t take 31A because you will be receiving credit for it with a 5. Regardless, it doesn’t matter because 31B isn’t really closed (in the sense that you won’t be able to enroll in it this weekend). It only says closed because you can only enroll in it through orientation.

is math 31B hard? what is the average GPA about it?

I had an excellent calculus teacher so perhaps my evaluation isn’t accurate but I found it quite easy (especially compared to my chem class and the linear algebra class I took later). The concepts certainly aren’t hard, if anything the calculations are just a bit tiresome. The average grade is about B I would say, maybe B-.

31B is just calculus BC…not hard. Average grade in all science classes are usually B- sometimes C+ sometimes B
