Passes for 4 degrees

Can 4 degrees get a weekend pass (Saturday and Sunday) to stay overnight at their sponsors house, or are they limited to day passes only? How does a 4 degree cadet earn a pass?

Yes.
Each pass represents one day. So, if you stay overnight, you would use 2 passes. If you stay out Friday-Sunday, you would use 3 pass units.

Each cadet starts with a “basic pass package.” Each semester, cadets can get more by being on merit lists (Dean’s, Commandant’s, Athletic Head’s) or by being in an excellent or outstanding squadron (based on a variety of factors). Also, a cadet can earn more passes by various things like volunteer work.

If i’ve heard right, there’s a way to stay with a sponsor Sat-Sun and use a basic pass for the saturday and a sponsor pass for the sunday. That’s what i’ve heard but of course I could be wrong.
you can use as many passes as you have to be gone on leave (as long as you have no military duties). I was going to be heading to the MN game on my passes (since 4-digs cant go with the team yet), but airline prices were too expensive by the time my ESSS was approved.

eh, last year when i tried to use the basic pass/sponsor pass combo, they wouldnt allow it…

the pass package is under revision right now, or at least that’s what our AOC told us last month

“The XYZ package is under revision right now” seems to be a trend.

Ah cute, 100 posts.

Something else that needs revision is the expiration of earned passes. Dean’s and Supie’s List passes are earned in the previous semester, but one only has the following quarter to use them. I’d like to see that expanded so that the extra performance passes can be used in the entire following semester. Do some of you uppers have a voice in the process?

performance passes dont expire… the 5 extra passes for dean’s, comm’s, and AD’s lists are kept til you use them. you can get performance passes other ways too, mainly in excelling in an area or helping the squad out (community service, etc)

Glad to see the discussion on passes as we just got back from PW, and I was going to post some questions about passes. Our 4 digcadet told us there have been some changes and that the upperclassman told them that they (the 4 digs) should not be pleased with the changes??

What day can you go to your sponsor’s and not use a pass? Is it only Sundays? And if you go on say Saturday and Sunday, if allowed, how many passes does that use? I would imagine our 4 dig would like to spend some nights at the sponsor’s house instead of just an afternoon.

I was told by another cadet that the 4 digs would have 5 basic passes before Oct. 1 and 5 basic passes after Oct. 1 to the end of the semester and that the 5 passes issued before Oct. 1 had to be used by Oct. 1 or they became invalid.

Is there somewhere that explains passes?

We were thinking about returning to COS maybe one of the 3 day weekends in Oct. if our cadet needed a break.

Thanks for any help.

I don’t know about the changes, but sponsor passes are for Sundays only. Saturday and Sunday is 2 passes (sponsor passes cannot be combined with any other passes).

It’s true that there are 5 passes before prog, and 5 after. If they are not used, basic passes (the passes each class is granted regardless of performance) do expire.

As HNeedle said, after the first semester, it is possible to gain passes by getting a 3.0 in either GPA or PEA or being in the top 25% MPA (5 passes for each of these accomplishments). Additionally, there are several opportunities to help out either around the squad or wing (usually set-up or clean-up for dances is a big deal), which will often earn the cadet passes. My old squad had contests with passes as the prizes, too.

You can come visit your cadet. Every day that he/she is gone from the academy is a pass, regardless of how long during that day (e.g. just Saturday is one pass, but Friday after school through Saturday is 2 passes)

Another option is for your cadet to visit you. Navy weekend is a 3 day weekend, and depending on the squad, he/she might be able to get a trip home approved. That would use 4 passes though (from Thursday night through Sunday evening). Your cadet needs to send up a SSS and a form 99 if you want to do that.

Hope that made sense…hit us up with more questions if you need to :)

So how would that work since one night (Thurs, Oct. 1) is the day of progress reports? Would that actual day be counted as using the passes that have to be used by Oct. 1? Guess that is a question of on or before Oct. 1.

Thanks for the help.

Missmuff,

How would Navy weekend (Thursday night through Sunday evening) only use 4 passes? I thought someone posted earlier that overnight used 2 passes. Since Thurs. - Sunday is 3 overnights wouldn’t that be at least 6 passes? I like your answer of 4 passes better but not sure how that is calculated. Thanks.

Each DAY is a pass. Thursday 1, Friday 2, Saturday 3, Sunday 4.
A “night pass” is two, because it includes both the evening (day 1) and the next day (day 2).

Performance passes and passes from merit lists are separate things. Merit lists give you extra basic pass units. Basic pass units expire, performance passes do not. I still have 6 performance passes from 4* year.

The changing pass package may or may not renew at prog.

merit passes, such as comm’s dean’s, ath, and supt, do reset. as of now, at prog all those passes reset whether or not you used them, so it’s a “use it or lose it” deal.

The new package that may be coming up would give a cadet xx passes for the semester with no reset. that would mean once you use them you’re out unless you recieve permisison for a discretionary pass.

performance passes (volunteering, other random things) are different from basic passes and never expire. they stay there until you use them.

the other awesome deal is wing staff. we get 99 passes. sign out using three, down to 96. sign back in, back at 99 ;)

Eagle, will the ‘new package’ reset the merit passes gained from the Deans/Supe’s list at semester rather than prog? Would make sense.

i’m not sure. as is now, it resests at the beginning of the semester and prog for which you wear your merit pins. if you earn Supts this fall, you don’t know until December, so we get it January through May. The way i understand the talks of a new system, you would still get it January-May, they just wouldn’t reset halfway through. i’ll see if i can find out more information on it

My son is an 4th year IC and was out of town for a game and missed parents weekend. My husband and I are going to visit him this weekend. He thinks he can get out for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon, per his AOC. Is he using a pass to do this? I hate for him to waste a pass for 2-3 hours.

yes, he is.

say whaaaaaaat?! so all these passes i have accumulated will expire?!

Uh…yeah…
All basic pass units get reset…unless you lose a merit list, or your squad’s performance goes down, you will only be gaining pass units…

…unless you would rather have a grand total of 5 Basic pass units for your entire cadet career…

no no, i misunderstood.
