@InfiniteWaves Ship also gives full tuition (not room and board) for valedictorians and salutatorians.
@buckscountymom I check PASSHE threads here occasionally, as they are so rare, and wondered how things are going?
@laralei thanks so much for checking in! things are going much better here than when we last spoke, lol. so many ups and downs. d19 has gotten acceptances to bloom, west chester, east stroudsburg, kutztown and ship. i have been impressed with the level of communication from bloom. i didn’t think we would like it as much as we do. she applied for honors college there, a current freshman in honors has been corresponding with her and she is in the process of setting up an in-person interview in the next few weeks. my fingers are crossed.
we haven’t heard anything else from west chester since she received her acceptance packet in the mail. no invite to honors (will that come later maybe? or maybe they are not inviting her), nothing that i can easily see about applying for scholarships. will look at the website again this week when i have time, but there was nothing in the acceptance packet.
the other passhe schools are off the table for various reasons - she will concentrate on these two and what they may offer now.
we did go to a tcnj open house over the weekend and she really liked that but OOS tuition even with highest merit (i think they may offer $12k tops) is not the most affordable option. i saw on threads here last year that they really strung regular decision applicants along until almost the final hours. hopefully she will lose interest in that after she learns even more about her PASSHE options lol.
how’s your D doing? is she home from WCU already for the holidays?
@buckscountymom last I heard TCNJ’s top award was $6k. I’m in state and that makes it much less affordable than most of our in-state options! They may have increased it the last year or so to compete with the other NJ publics.
@buckscountymom : what about SUNY Geneseo, Plattsburgh, Oneonta, New Paltz… ? St Mary’s MD?
NJ isn’t a good deal OOS and tcnj, while excellent, is also super stingy
Ohio Wesleyan, Allegheny, Wooster can be generous.
Umw in Virginia has automatic scholarships as well as competitive ones if you can look further afield.
thank you - D doesn’t want to be more than 2 hours from home so that is much more limiting!
perhaps have her expand her reach a bit to half a day’s drive? Within 4 hours, she has literally dozens if not a hundred colleges.
I go to Arcadia. I had a 4.1 (weighted) and a 1420 SAT. Without qualifying for financial aid, they gave a $25,000 merit scholarship. Other people say they got a lot of aid (I think they try to cover everything beyond the EFC). But honestly I don’t know anyone that actually enjoys it here. Everyone knows someone that’s transferring.
I know a young woman who was offered a Keystone Scholarship at Cheyney with good grades and OK SATs. She said that it would lead to a free Master’s, too, but I don’t actually see that in the information on the website. Cheyney has had rough times in recent years but she was excited to take a full ride. I think Cheyney is the pilot for the program. https://www.cheyney.edu/keystone/About.aspx
I am disappointed in the merit aid my daughter just received from WCU. They are giving her $3000 a year, which is nice but certainly much less the the amounts that other schools have offered her. We are OOS so expense is high, but at least the $3000 helps cover the difference in price for affiliated housing. Ship is offering $2000 merit plus another $5700 because she is high stats OOS. Rowan (in state for us) offered her $10k/year. York is also offering $10k. Too bad she really likes WCU the most.
@libbyk would you mind sharing you daughter’s stats? Curious about who Rowan gives Money to. And what’s her major? Thanks!
@NJWrestlingmom Her major is Early Childhood Education, SAT 1360, GPA 3.8, 2 AP classes and a many honors classes.
Rowan is better than Ship and similar to WCU academically. PASSHE schools don’t give much merit.
Thank you, @LibbyK! My S17 is an elementary ed major at Rowan and loves it, if that’s any help! His sophomore year on campus apartment is to DIE for! Good luck to everyone with their apps and decisions!
