I really enjoy politics, maths and economics tremendously, like its a real passion for me which is why I think MIT, Harvard and Princeton would be great unis for me as they are apparently the best math-economics alongside Cambridge which I'm also going to apply to.

But with economics and politics the way I release these passions are by reading as many articles in the Economist, the finance sections of newspapers, reading CNN etc etc. Now obviously I can't put these on my applications yet I plan to write my essay on how much I adore economics and politics to persuade them that I am passionate about going to these schools.

But I'm wondering if adcoms will scratch their head and say 'Where did this loving economics/politics come from?' I'm going to Andover as a rising sophomore so I'll join the Young Democrats and the Economics clubs but is that enough because I feel its a huge passion for me and I don't think being members in two clubs justifies it.

Basically I'm saying can/should I write my essay on how much I love economics and politics through watching CNN, reading books etc even though I've achieved nothing in these areas on my own? Because if I don't put it in some place in my application, then its not reflecting me as its a huge passion of mine.

Sorry for the mess of this post, its just the one major bump in my application thoughts

Well if u are liking the math-economics which is called econometrics, you should do research on it... that can show expression of passion... and as for politics, runnin for positions in certain clubs will help... debate, Model UN etc.

Summers are another good time to get involved with programs or internships related to your passions. I'm sure the faculty at Andover will have a lot of ideas for you.

Okay thanks guys, and I'll definitely look into a research volunteering bit with a econometrics professor/postgrad more likely.

And I was already thinking of a internship with a Congressman at Andover. But in terms of summer programs I'm wondering is there any econometrics program? Okay, thanks guys! Keep it coming!

For Andover affiliated/informed people what university should I contact for research and who is the Congressman of the district? Ta

It really depends what your other EC's besides Young Democrats and Economics clubs are. I'm a lot like you, I read the Economist, watch MSNBC (I like it better than CNN, personally), and keep up to date with the economy and politics through a lot of other publications. I don't do it for college, but I like to be informed.

What's different for me is that I found a way to tie it into my schoolwork and EC's. As far a politics goes, I am a LD debator from my school, a lawyer for Mock Trial, I'm in clubs such as Model UN, Junior Statesman, and I represent my school in Student Council. I'm planning on taking AP US Gov/Pol. Also, Consider volunteering for the current presidential/senatorial/house of rep campaign for whomever you support. There are countless ways to get involved in political activism that will showcase your interest.

Economics is a little bit harder. Consider joining clubs like FBLA. Take AP Micro/Marco either with your school or as a self study. Alot of people who are really interested in business start small businesses or invest in stock. The options for using economics as an EC are more limited, but you can consider starting clubs yourself.

As for math, take classes to get ahead in math at a Community College, participate in math competitions (Math Olympiad, etc.), tutor others at your school in math, and join or start a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta (I think that's the name).

There are always ways to get involved no matter what your interestes are. I hope this helped you!

my bad i tend to not look at the side anymore, cuz lots of posters dont bother sharing their gender... i am sorry... i meant agreed to what She said :p

Okay, never heard of the Junior Statesmen and the FBLA but that would be great! I also have done and will continue to do Mock Trial, Debating and Model UN...

Yeah, I'm finding it hard to think of creating economics clubs but I'm looking to make/join a club that contemplates and examines the different economic policies of countries etc. Would that work you think?

Any competitions or summer econometric/economic programs people can think of?

usually theoretical economics is done with PhD profs... and its their own research... Economics Club sounds great, but u gotta make use of it... like brain storm ideas etc for research maybe?? get ur high school to fund u a mentor?

This website lists a lot of summer programs and competitions. I can't think of any summer programs that only do economics but my D is at a math camp now where some of the students are studying economic problems for the research project component. She is at a program called Texas Mathworks.

There is an excellent summer program called Economics for Leaders, which, if you are selected, is room, board and tuition paid. With about six different locations throughout the country (generally on college campuses), the program is half economics classes and half leadership training, with very bright talented students from around the US.

just curious...do any of you other economics/politics lovers play Fantasy Congress? it's really fun during Fall season when there are lots of people.
