Hey,

I'm currently a HS junior. One of my greatest passions is playing the guitar, which I have done for about 7 years.
I was wondering if there was any way that I could somehow add this to my college application, as an EC or talent?
The thing is that I have never started a guitar club, worked at a guitar store, or gave guitar lessons, so would I have to get involved in any of these to have my guitar playing as an EC?

And I will most likely incorporate my guitar background into my college essays.

Thanks.

you can put it as a hobby. but if u really want it to help you in the college app. process, i would definitely do the stuff u listed. join a band, do praise team, teach little kids, start a music club, or something.

I did the latter two. It’s fun. But I’ll also list guitar as a hobby.

You could do other things with guitar such as teaching guitar to children, collecting guitars for the underprivileged, working at a guitar store like you said, implement an after-school program at an inner city school for teaching instrument-playing to children, etc. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Thanks guys! I think that I’ll start an after-school program for guitar lessons, it sounds like a lot of fun.

You guys had awesome suggestions and were very helpful.

That’s a very admirable and noble cause. I was just thinking the other day how underprivileged children cannot afford the joy of instruments. You might even think about starting a non-profit organization aimed at bringing the joy of music to underprivileged children.

I do that at my school. Teamed up with one of the leaders in the Boys and Girls Club and we got a grant for 10 guitars to keep there afterschool. It’s pretty fun.

Wow, I’m getting super excited about this now!
Obstinate, how did you manage to get a grant for the guitars?

The person I worked with from the Boys and Girls Club also loves music a whole lot, and so I talked with her about it and she was excited. She approached the club leader about the idea of getting new guitars, and we were able to get some. They were the cheap $20 kind, but they’re something. If you get the really basic ones you can get a lot!

There are a few foundations that give grants for projects started by teens. Google and you probably can find them.

You also can conduct fundraisers.
