Passports

I'm from the US, so we don't need passports to travel back and forth from Canada.

So, do I need to have a passport right away when I go to McGill?
I'm going to get one tomorrow, but it is a bunch more money to get it fast. So can I wait the long one or do I have to pay a bunch more to get t in 2 weeks?

Thanks in advance.

That is your main concern and I doubt if you need to pay for the fast post. What is the worst?? I am sure it will be sent to your home and your folks can get it to you.......probably well before you will be coming home the first time.

i thought they changed the law so that u have to show passport when going to canada

have her passport but she was not coming back right away.....so her roommate FedExd passport to my office and I hand carried it to her. I think the issue is gaining entry back into US.....especially in the current atmosphere. That is the best I can tell you....GF used drivers license.

OK, I will just have my dad send it later then. Thanks

actually in order to get your study permit from Canada Immigration you need to have a passport... its one of the required documents, and the visa gets put directly into your passport. so make sure you have one.

Actually, thats why I specified U.S., because we don't need passports to go over the boarder. According to <a href="http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/guides/5269E2.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/guides/5269E2.html</a> you don't need the passport to get a permit.

uh i think you need your passport to get your CAQ

<a href="http://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/anglais/immigration/students/documents_required.html#us%5B/url%5D">http://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/anglais/immigration/students/documents_required.html#us</a>
" If you currently live in the United States, Greenland or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, enclose the following documents with your Application for a CAQ for studies:

passport format photo stapled to the application;
payment of fees to process the application;
photocopy of identity pages from your passport (pages with personal information, the photo and expiry date of the passport);
original or certified copy of the letter of acceptance from the educational institution that you will attend;
originals or certified copies des proof of financial capacity. "

i have an american passport but i did it overseas so i'm not sure (cause i've always used passports too)

or do you already have a caq and are renewing your passport and asking for border crossing issues? i know that you have to carry your old passport if you renewed and some immigration stuff goes with your old passport number.

well thats the thing. I had a passport. but it expired. The photo with the CAQ is from that but right now is the between stage where I am waiting for the new one to come in the mail.

I don't have the old one because you have to give it to the passport office to get a new one.

that's weird. i still have my old US passport. they just punch a buncha holes in it.

I just got back from Montreal, and when I checked in at la aeroport (oui, mon francais est tres mal!) the airline claimed you needed a Passport or Birth Certificate to check in (boston to montreal flight). I did like McGill though, solid place. Definately up there on my list, prob. #1. Of course this is for US Citizens.

i think you need either a passport or 2 pieces of other identification (birth certificate and drivers license)....wait..or is that to go down to the states? blah :-P

luckily i'm driving, but i do believe you need the passport to fly international
