PAST APPLICANTS! What was your strong point?

Hello.

I'm a current junior and I am really interested in Cornell.

However, my GPA is definately not my strong point. I have a 3.67UW and 4.0W, mostly because of a C in AP Chem (I know, gasp, everyone on CC is the next Einstein. or so it seems) and Honors math classes (I know, you're probably questioning my intelligence).

So science? not my forte. same with math... yuck.

But I do truly love history and English, and I have gotten consistant As on those classes. My SAT is a 2230 as of now, but I will definatey take it again to achieve a 2300+, and I have four 750+ SAT2 scores.

I have taken community college classes relating to history and english, and yada yada yada. And extra currics, I have it all.

So I was wondering:

Is it completely bogus of me to reach for CORNELL because of my GPA? Or do I have a legit chance?

(I would appreciate real insight on this, this isn't a chance kind of thing -- past applicants, especially if you didn't have a 5.0 or a ridic high GPA... especially if your UW wasn't so high... what do you think made you stand out? is it even possible? insight please!)

ur perfectly fine.
They dont care about ur GPA because it can get screwed with just one class so they look at all the individual grades and the rigor of your classes.
good luck!

probably test scores (2340 SAT, 34 ACT, 2380 combined on best 3 subject tests and like 780 and 750 for the other two). my essays were decent and my ECs were probably better than average.

i did get a C in precalc and average straight Bs in math.

if you apply ED, you should have a fair chance

hmm as for advice, definitely try to figure out what could make you jump off the page and concentrate all efforts in making sure adcoms wont miss it...probably why i uber failed and got some pretty surprising decisions for a couple schools. yes, an asian talking about medicine and binomial nomenclature in an essay (i.e. me) was not too hot of an idea. makes me wish i wrote an essay that turned my failures modding my xbox into some unbelievably profound prespective on life. jk. but yea, if ED, you should have a fair chance i think since one person from my school got in with similar stats.

You have a chance everywhere you apply. Don't label yourself as a weak applicant. Not every school is looking for someone who is overachieving. You definitely have a shot at Cornell. Just like every other applicant has a shot. Apply early, and apply broadly.

Relax. You'll are fine.
I had a 3.6ish UW GPA; CR:720, M:800, W:620, Total: 2140; Math 2: 800, Physics 800, Spanish 800; wasn't even in top 10%; decent EC's.... and I ended up being one of the only 10-15 Int. Students getting Fin. Aid. As you can see, a loooot more goes into getting into Cornell rather than your GPA. Basically you are better off than me in almost every way, I see no reason why you shouldn't be a competitive applicant.

I did have a very obvious upward trend in grades though, B's freshmen year and then on straight A's.... but hey, still crappy GPA and decent everything else.

"I have a 3.67UW and 4.0W, mostly because of a C in AP Chem"

same here! Don't worry about it. Chem had nothing to do with my major, so I don't think it really affected me much. Plus, colleges like to see that you tried. My counselor wrote in her rec for me that unlike some other ppl who dropped after the first semester because of a C, I stayed and ended up passing the AP exam! So...if you can get your counselor to write something nice for you, in explanation for the C, it might help a little.

My strong point...probably a lot of community service.

I applied to CAS the first time around with a 1250 SAT (back when it was out of 1600 only) and 3.8 UW GPA and 3 years research experience with a publication.

The second time around I applied to CALS with the same HS stats, plus an additional year of research and 2 publications. I also had a 3.9 GPA at my college. I think my strong points for CALS was my research and the fact that I was clearly a good fit for the college.

Honestly out of everything they mention...your GPA is probably counted the least. If you have the reccomendations and the extracurriculars and the test scores to back it up you will do amazing dont worry.

I had a 4.0 weighted GPA also and my Unweighted GPA was something like 3.7 i would assume. Maybe a little higher or lower. I was the opposite of you. I am a math and science kid and i was horrible at history and English. My SAT and ACT scores were lower than yours. I got a 32 on the ACTs. Im telling you that you will be perfectly fine if you apply. My SATII scores i had 2 above 750. My extracurriculars were mainly in debate and a cultural society. Honestly i wasnt too different from you. And now this year im gonna be entering CALS in the AEM program as a freshman.

I think you will be fine if you apply.
