Past Financial Aid Packages?

Hello. I'm usually a person who doesn't post - instead, I vigorously search for the information I need before I open my mouth and so here I am, very surprised. I am moderately indignant that UChicago is so obscure with their financial aid. Their site does not have information about whether Pell Grants replace self-help (I got an e-mail response and disappointingly, they said it doesn't), but most importantly, I wanted to know how big the self-help package was and what did it consist of.

I got an e-mail response that it's $9,405, which is awfully high compared to most schools I've seen. Could I confirm with people who had gotten aid from Chicago? Could someone also tell me how the self-help is apportioned? Are loans included in that $9,405 and if so, how much? If not, still how much? And does that also include summer expectations? I should really be formal and not express my anger, but I can't stand the rife of questions that remain unanswered. Are there any tables that show how self-help change within the years? I'm hoping the Odyssey Scholarships will make a difference to reducing this self-help amount.

For whatever it's worth, the ucan-network.org site says that for the University of Chicago:

Average Undergraduate Loans
Owed At Graduation
$25,291

Chicago's aid package to my S was excellent and matched or exceeded all but one. He choose to attend the school that exceeded Chicago's offer because he preferred it; money was not a factor. Chicago's package exceeded at least three others.

I don't know the answer to your question, and I'm not in the position to answer them (I'm not covering my tuition bill).

If I were you, I'd try reaching Chicago's financial aid office one more time-- not by e-mail, but by phone. I've heard a few times that the office tends to be cranky, so just brave through it, and be persistent until you feel you have satisfactory answers to your questions. You deserve accurate, factual information, as much as I like anecdotes and averages as much as anybody else :-)
